Henry Cejudo manager stated TJ Dillashaw will miss weight and Cejudo will fight Joseph Benavidez on Jan. 19
UFC Fight Night 143: Henry Cejudo vs. TJ Dillashaw is an upcoming mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship that will be held on January 19, 2019 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, United States.
UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw will drop down to the flyweight division to battle divisional king Henry Cejudo for his title.
The event will mark the first as part of the promotion’s five year contract with ESPN and the first to be broadcast on the network’s digital streaming platform ESPN+.
As noted Dillashaw knocked out Cody Garbrandt in the main event to retain his title. Dillashaw’s victory over Garbrandt marked his fourth straight victory and eighth in his past nine; Cejudo (13-2) has won three in a row.
Cejudo edged Demetrious Johnson in a split-decision thriller to claim the flyweight title in a bout widely considered the greatest flyweight matchup in MMA history.
Henry Cejudo’s manager Ali Abdelaziz expects TJ Dillashaw to miss his mark, in which case Cejudo will apparently not accept the fight. Instead, Abdelaziz says Cejudo will give a short-notice title shot to long-time contender Joseph Benavidez.
“I don’t think TJ’s going to make weight and if he misses weight by .1 pounds, Joseph Benavidez is going to fight, we’re going to give Joseph a shot,” Abdelaziz said in a recent interview with MMA Fighting.
“Because I personally don’t think he’ll make it. If he makes it, he’s going to be weak, fragile, and he’s going to have a long, long night with the champ. He’s a good fighter, but he can’t fight at the pace Henry’s going to fight him at 125. He doesn’t have the speed to fight Henry.”
