(born October 13, 1961) is an American professional basketball coach and former player who now serves as an NBA player-coach and as an analyst for NBC Sports (NBA).
When Rivers was picked by the Atlanta Hawks in 1983, he had already played for Marquette University for three full seasons. A former NBA point guard with the Hawks, he also played for the Clippers, Knicks, and Spurs before retiring in 1991. 1988 saw Rivers make his NBA debut as a member of the All-Star team.
Career
With more than four NBA seasons, Rivers served as an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic[12].
In 2000, Rivers was named Coach of the Year during his first season with the Magic.
[14] Although the Magic were expected to finish dead last in the standings that year, Rivers guided them to within one game of a postseason spot.
In the summer of 2000, Rivers attempted to build a “Big Three” NBA squad with the Magic’s free-agent spending binge. When Tim Duncan was a free agent, the Magic were interested in signing him and combining him with Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady. In spite of this, Duncan signed a new contract with the San Antonio Spurs due to Rivers’ stringent policy of not allowing family members to ride on the team’s jet.
Doc Rivers committed a foul on the field
He was given a technical foul by the authorities after an altercation with official Tony Brothers at half court on Wednesday as his son Austin Rivers of the Houston Rockets smiled.
By waving to the Houston crowd and pretending to hold a phone to his head, Austin Rivers seemed to be having a great time as his father Doc Rivers was coming off the court and into the locker room. During the Rockets’ 102-93 win against the Clippers, the hilarious Rivers father-son encounter occurred with 1 minute, 31 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Coach Doc Rivers of the Los Angeles Clippers was dismissed from Saturday’s game against the Houston Rockets after collecting two technical fouls. Austin Rivers, the Rockets’ star shooting guard, was having a ball.
Austin was only a few feet away from Doc when he pleaded with the umpires to award his father a technical foul as his team trailed 96-88 with 1:31 remaining. Eventually, Doc got them to comply, after a lot of wrangling on his part.
When asked about his father’s predicament, Austin Rivers remarked, “He genuinely very sensitive with things like that, so we’ll see.” He’s my best friend, yet it was a wonderful time that I savoured much.” That was a great show. As a result, “It was enjoyable.”
Because Doc Rivers was unsure how many timeouts the Clippers had left, the officials had a problem with him. After Rivers missed a 30-second challenge window, crew head Tony Brothers revealed that his organisation provided the Clippers false information about available timeouts. It seems like Rivers was informed that he could retain his timeout since there had been no challenge, but this was not the case at all.
Asked by his son to receive a technical foul, Doc Rivers said: “He should” and “I don’t care.”
Rather of blaming the players, the coach focused his wrath on the referees.
It would have been OK for Rivers if he had been informed that he would only be given one timeout instead of two, he added. Officials cannot tell me that I get my timeout back, then have me use it, and then tell me after the fact, you don’t have it…. Those oversights are just not possible. The two officials who informed me they rushed away bothered me the most. They left it in the hands of Tony Brothers. Oh, come on. That is not possible. A four-point game doesn’t allow you to perform such a thing That’s not going to happen. No, that is impossible.
In this league, you can’t stare at people, so I received a technical penalty for looking at the official for too long,” he said. That’s not fair, in my opinion. To allow a game come down to the officials and free throws, I don’t believe, is fair for us as a squad. As for the individuals who came out to see us play and spent their hard-earned money, I believe we deserved more. The same goes for the supporters who came out to support both teams.
His father will not hold anything against him, Austin Rivers remarked after the game.
