The Mountain West Championship Game pits the Fresno State Bulldogs against the Boise State Broncos. See our Mountain West Championship odds series for our forecast and pick for Fresno State vs. Boise State.

The Mountain West Championship Game between the Fresno State Bulldogs and Boise State Broncos has been played before. In 2014, 2017, and 2018, they did so, with Boise State winning two of the three encounters. Since the conflict in 2018, a lot has changed.

Jeff Tedford, the head coach of Fresno State, left coaching but has subsequently rejoined the Bulldogs. Bryan Harsin was the coach at Boise State four years ago. After leaving Boise State, he absolutely flopped at Auburn. The new head coach at Boise State is Andy Avalos. Dirk Koetter, a former head coach at Boise State, serves as his interim offensive coordinator.

Koetter was appointed the head coach of Boise State in 1998, 24 years ago. Before accepting the head coaching position at Arizona State, he temporarily led the Broncos. Before taking the helm as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Koetter worked as an offensive coordinator in the NFL for a number of teams.

After failing in that position, he moved on to work as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons before returning to Boise as an offensive analyst, a staff member with a minor and peripheral role. When the Broncos collapsed early in the season, highlighted by a humiliating loss to UTEP, Avalos shuffled the staff and asked Koetter to fill in. Koetter didn’t intend to be the offensive coordinator.

Koetter concurred, but only for the time being. The fact that he won’t be the team’s offensive coordinator the following season makes this situation for Boise State much more crucial.

Mountain West Championship Odds

The other major storyline surrounding this game is that Jake Haener, the tough and resilient but frequently injured quarterback for Fresno State, is likely to play in his final game today. Haener’s absence earlier in the season caused the Bulldogs to drop a few games that they otherwise would have won.

In this game, Haener and Tedford will come to the end of a highly emotional trip. Against a top opponent and rival in the Mountain West, they want to seize the opportunity.  Here are the odds for the Fresno State-Boise State Mountain West Championship, courtesy of FanDuel.

Mountain West Championship Odds: Fresno State-USC Odds

Bulldogs of Fresno State: +3.5 (-122)

Broncos of Boise State: -3.5 (+100)

Over: 54.5 (-108) (-108)

Under: 54.5 (-112)

Why Fresno State Could Cover the Spread

In general, you don’t want to bet against Jake Haener. He has faced many hardships throughout the years, which gives him experience and toughness, which gives Fresno State a significant advantage in a championship game.

Tedford, who has also experienced numerous obstacles, ought to be able to provide Haener with a strategy that will work against a Boise State defence that has been excellent in 2022 but hasn’t played many extremely good quarterbacks. A strong passing game from a dependable thrower is something Fresno State can offer Boise State, something the Broncos haven’t seen much of this year.

Why Boise State Could Cover the Spread

The defence for Boise State is prepared for Jake Haener’s challenge. It should be noted that the Broncos have improved significantly on the offensive side of the ball since Dirk Koetter took over the offence.

Taylen Green, a quarterback with two threats, has developed his skills for the Broncos. His pace is a factor in the match that Fresno State might not be able to fully account for. It’s also a quality Haener lacks.

Final Fresno State-Boise State Prediction & Pick

Being able to acquire Fresno State plus 3.5 points means the Bulldogs can lose by a field goal and still cover if this game goes down to the wire, which it very well may. If the number drops to 2.5, avoid the area, but that extra point feels like it warrants a play.
