Starting pitcher Drew Smyly has been added to the Chicago Cubs’ 2022 rotation as a key player. Drew Smyly has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $19 million contract with the Cubs, according to Ken Rosenthal of the Athletics.
Smyly was an important member of the Cubs’ rotation all season long. He had a 7-8 record over 22 games. Smyly also has a total of 106.1 innings pitched, 91 strikeouts, and a 3.47 earned run average.
The Cubs’ current pitching rotation is the same as last year’s due to Drew Smyly’s comeback. Marcus Stroman, Kyle Hendricks, Justin Steele, and Keegan Thompson will all reappear on Smyly’s team.
The Cub’s pitching staff suffered a lot from injuries last year. During the 2022 campaign, Drew Smyly, Stroman, and Kyle Hendricks all had absences. They might be one of the most dependable groups in baseball if they can stay healthy.
The Cubs’ acquisition of Drew Smyly is merely the most recent move they have made this offseason. They completed their first offseason signing over the weekend, acquiring an All-Star in Dansby Swanson on a seven-year contract. In addition to signing Swanson, they also added Cody Bellinger, a previous MVP.

The Cubs had a 74-88 record at the end of the 2022 year. After the Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals, they took third place in the NL Central. The Cubs now want to be competitive in 2023 with the group they have started to put together. It might be beneficial in the long run to add Drew Smyly back to the rotation.
