In a play that must be seen to be believed, the New England Patriots lost to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. With three seconds left in their Week 15 matchup at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the Patriots and Raiders were poised at 24. With the ball at their 45, New England could have attempted a Hail Mary to win it or simply kneeled on it to force OT. They tried an alternative instead, and it could not have gone worse.

Rhamondre Stevenson received an inside handoff from New England and rushed to the Raiders’ 32-yard line. Stevenson attempted to prolong the play as though the Patriots were losing the game and this was their final opportunity rather than simply going down and forcing overtime.

He returned the ball to Jakobi Meyers, who similarly failed to recognize the urgency of the situation and failed to comprehend that he should have simply gone down.

Meyers began to run in reverse. He attempted to pass the ball back to Mac Jones as defenders closed in. Chandler Jones, however, picked it up and returned it for the winning score.

The Raiders won 30-24 as a result of the play.

It would be difficult to list all of the stupid elements in that play.

First, why didn’t the Patriots simply kneel and force overtime?

2) Why didn’t Stevenson just dive down with the ball instead of pitching it?

3. What on earth was Meyers contemplating?

4) Why was no one on the squad aware that they might have simply entered overtime?

Something like this might be anticipated from a Josh McDaniels club that consistently blows leads. However, it is extremely embarrassing to witness this from a Bill Belichick team, which is supposed to take pride in playing situational, intelligent football.
