American football running back Alvin Mention Kamara (born July 25, 1995) plays for the New Orleans Saints of the NFL (NFL). He transferred to the University of Tennessee from Hutchinson Community Collegiate and played college football there before being selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints.
In 2017, he was honored as the NFL’s Rookie of the Year. Over the course of his five NFL seasons, he has been selected to the Pro Bowl each year and has been named to the All-Pro team twice (once as a member of the second team). As of the 2020 season, Kamara had tied Ernie Nevers as the only NFL player with six rushing touchdowns in a game.
Coach Dennis Allen said after Sunday’s game that standout running back Alvin Kamara had a rib injury and would be limited for the rest of the season. Having re-signed veteran Latavius Murray to the practice squad on Tuesday, New Orleans now has additional insurance at the position before Week 2. Murray, now 32 years old and most recently seen in 2021 with the Ravens, spent two seasons with the Saints as Kamara’s primary backup.
After Sunday’s victory, Allen told reporters he wasn’t worried about Kamara’s immediate availability, suggesting he anticipated the Pro Bowler to be ready for next Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers. The Saints were suffering from a lack of nutritious options before Murray’s return.

Dwayne Washington, the team’s No. 3 running back, is listed on the injury report with a neck ailment that will keep him out of action for a second consecutive game, joining Alvin Kamara on the list of inactive players. This leaves the team with only Mark Ingram and Tony Jones Jr. as healthy backups.
While Alvin Kamara saw limited action in the Saints’ Week 1 victory over the Falcons, head coach Dennis Allen later stated that Kamara had sustained a rib ailment. To prepare for Week 2, the Saints re-signed veteran Latavius Murray to the practice squad on Tuesday, giving them an extra body at the position. The 32-year-old Murray spent two seasons with the Saints as Kamara’s primary backup before joining the Ravens in 2021.
Following Sunday’s victory, Allen told reporters that he was not worried about Kamara’s immediate availability and that the Pro Bowler would be ready to play against the Buccaneers the following week. Before the Saints reunited with Murray, however, they lacked physically fit options.

Kamara is the quickest player in NFL history to accumulate 3,000 receiving yards in addition to 3,000 running yards. Roger Craig had the record for the most games needed to accomplish this, but Alvin Kamara did it in 66.
Kamara missed the previous four games due to injury, but he came back in Week 14 to lead the Saints to a 30-9 victory over the New York Jets on the strength of 27 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown.
Last week, in a 30-20 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, he finished the regular season with 30 carries for 146 rushing yards. In 2021, he caught 47 passes for 439 yards and five touchdowns while running for 898 yards on 240 carries. He became the first player in franchise history to be selected for the Pro Bowl in each of the team’s first five seasons when he was nominated for a fifth time that year (2021).
