Benintendi Injury

Born on July 6, 1994, Andrew Sebastiano Benintendi plays outfield for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). His professional baseball career began in 2016 with the Boston Red Sox and ended with the Kansas City Royals in 2022.

In college, Benintendi batted for the Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team at the University of Arkansas. Benintendi was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2015 MLB draft and debuted with the team in 2016.

In 2018, his team won the World Series, and he was a key contributor. Benintendi will play for the Royals after playing for the Red Sox in 2020. He was a 2021 Gold Glove winner and a 2022 All-Star. In 2022, the Yankees made a trade with the Royals to obtain him. On Friday at Tropicana Field, Yankees outfielder Andrew Benintendi left the game with a right wrist injury and did not return.

Benintendi shook his hand and grimaced after taking a good swing at a sinker thrown by Tampa Bay starter Jeffrey Springs that was traveling at 89.8 mph in the third inning. Benintendi’s X-rays were negative, according to the Yankees, and he will have an MRI on Saturday.

The Royals’ 28-year-old All-Star second baseman Benintendi was traded to the Yankees on the day of the August 2 Trade Deadline for the minor leaguers Chandler Champlain, T.J. Sikkema, and Beck Way.

Benintendi has played left field for New York in 33 games and has batted.246/.323/.395 (28-for-114) with nine doubles, one triple, two home runs, and 13 RBIs. On Friday, in the first inning, he hit a double. Oswaldo Cabrera, a rookie, pinch-hit for Benintendi and popped out to Taylor Walls at short.

Cabrera, Aaron Hicks, and Tim Locastro may see more time at the plate in the short term if Benintendi is sidelined. Though Giancarlo Stanton has been on the active roster since his return from the injured list on August 25, he has yet to make an appearance in the outfield.

In a three-team deal that also involved the New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals, the Red Sox sent Andrew Benintendi and cash to the Royals in exchange for Franchy Cordero, Josh Wieckowski, and three players to be named later (identified in June as minor league prospects: outfielder Freddy Valdez from the Mets, and pitchers Grant Gambrell and Luis De La Rosa from the Royals).
