Darius Slay Injury

After losing Darius Slay and Jordan Mailata, two starters on defense for the Eagles could be out for the rematch with the Jaguars in Week 4.

Unfortunately for Slay, he went to the locker room after hurting his forearm.

While Jalen Hurts scored a touchdown off an interception he returned, Mailata injured his shoulder trying to make the tackle.

To replace Avonte Maddox, who was already out with an injury, the Eagles substituted Zech McPhearson at cornerback (rib). At the same time, with Andre Dillard still on injured reserve, Jack Driscoll replaced Mailata at left tackle.

Darius Slay Career

Darius Slay Injury

Most NFL draught experts and scouts believed that Slay would be selected in the second or third round after graduating from Mississippi State. He attended the NFL combine after being invited to do so and passed all of the necessary combine and positional drills.

At the end of 2013, Slay had arthroscopic surgery to fix a torn meniscus in his right knee. The Detroit Lions gave Slay a four-year, $5.28 million deal that year, with $3.12 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $2.22 million.

He made his first interception in Week 4 of the following season, helping the New York Jets to a 24-17 victory on the road. That season, he also recorded five tackles and a pass deflection.

In a 14-21 loss to the St. Louis Rams in 2015, he made two solo tackles, deflected a pass, and picked off quarterback Case Keenum.

The Detroit Lions had a 9-7 record, good enough for second place in the NFC North and a wild card playoff spot. In the Lions’ NFC Wildcard Game loss to the Seattle Seahawks in 2017, Slay made two tackles on the day.

Jordan Mailata Career

Darius Slay Injury

Mailata made the league’s final roster of 53 players, but he didn’t play at all in his rookie season.

The former rugby player was placed on the Eagles’ injured reserve list on December 14th, 2018. He had what doctors call a stress fracture in his back. He was unable to play at all during the 2019 campaign because of yet another back injury.

The beginning of Mailata’s third NFL season was a tumultuous one. In July, the Eagles deactivated him from the COVID-19 list, but by August, he was back in the lineup.

The offensive tackle made his Eagles debut back in September. For the game against the Washington Football Team, he came in for an injured Jake Driscoll. Due to Jason Peter’s injury, Mailata got his first chance to start a game in Week 4.

Mailata participated in 15 games, 10 of which he started.
