Christensen Injury

Central defender Andreas Christensen has been sidelined with an ankle ligament injury, dealing a further blow to Barcelona’s already weakened defense. The injury was revealed on the official club website for the Catalans giants.

It was announced that “first team member Andreas Christensen has a sprained left ankle,” after tests were run on Wednesday. Until he is healthy enough to return, his absence will continue.

According to Javi Miguel, a reporter with Diario AS, the injury is “worse than predicted.” According to the results of the tests, Christensen may be sidelined for up to a month, meaning he won’t be able to return to action for Barcelona until after the World Cup.

Before La Liga takes a break from the competition in Qatar on November 9, Barcelona will play ten games. The next scheduled domestic match will be Barça vs. Osasuna on December 31.

Christensen’s Injury

The injury occurred during Barcelona’s 1-0 loss to Inter in the Champions League at the San Siro, where Christensen was playing. Christensen was substituted out for Gerard Pique in the second half.

The Dane has joined Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo, and Hector Bellerin on the Camp Nou bench as Xavi’s team prepares for some crucial matches.

Barcelona’s upcoming schedule includes a La Liga match against Celta Vigo, a Champions League rematch against Inter, and a trip to Santiago Bernabeu for a Clasico versus Real Madrid.

Barcelona’s chances of advancing to the quarterfinals of the Champions League were severely damaged by their loss to Inter Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday. In order to advance out of Group C, the Catalans need to win against Inter.

Failure to finish in the top two slots would be devastating for Barcelona’s football and financial fortunes as they would be forced to play in the Europa League for a second consecutive season.

Hope for Pique’s Redemption?

Christensen’s absence has left Xavi with only two healthy center backs in Pique and Eric Garcia for the upcoming encounter. Although Pique spent the first part of the season on the bench, he has been able to make a strong case for increased playing time as a result of recent injuries.

Christensen Injury

The 35-year-old will be needed in the center of Barcelona’s defense despite only seeing limited action so far this season. In addition to his regular central defenders, Xavi also has Frenkie de Jong and Marcos Alonso on the roster who can play left back and center back, respectively.

Xavi, who acquired Kounde in the summer, will also be anticipating his return. The Frenchman had a strong start to the season but a hamstring injury sustained while playing for France at the international level forced him to miss time.

It is Miguel’s understanding that Kounde’s goal is to return for Sunday’s Clasico match versus Real Madrid. A win for Barcelona in this game that could determine who wins the title would be greatly aided by the return of the former Sevilla player.
