James Conner Injury

After losing top receiver DeAndre Hopkins for six games, the Cardinals are already feeling the effects. The team may now be missing its star running back, as well.

Arizona lost Week 2 of the NFL season on the road to the Raiders, and James Conner left with an ankle injury. When he first left, he was marked as doubtful to return by the team.

Up to his injury, Conner had been Arizona’s most effective rusher. Seven carries for 25 yards and two receptions for another 26 yards was his total output.

Without Conner on the field, the Cardinals will likely lean on Eno Benjamin as their starting running back, but they will use a committee strategy to obtain plenty of carries for the rest of their backfield guys.

There was no word on Conner’s condition following the game, thus Benjamin would probably start in his absence. Williams, meanwhile, is a seasoned running back who would see ample playing time.

After Conner was taken out of the game, Benjamin and Williams took their turns coming in. Both partners shared equally in the workload. They can both do a great job catching passes out of the backfield. If Conner is unable to play, the workload will shift to the two aforementioned players, as well as quarterback Kyler Murray.

Outside of Benjamin and Williams, Ward was the only other back on Sunday’s active roster. It’s possible he won’t play much offense because he’s mostly a kick returner. A sixth-round draft pick, Ingram did not play on Sunday. If Conner were to go down, he would likely get game action, albeit his role could be limited.

If you’re curious who Conner’s backup was last year, it was Chase Edmonds. It was during the 2022 NFL offseason when he inked with the Dolphins.
