England got a boost before this summer’s World Cup when it looked like Lucy Bronze didn’t get seriously hurt in the first game of Barcelona’s UWCL semi-final against Chelsea.
Bronze fell down in the second half of the first leg at Stamford Bridge, holding her right knee and getting help from the Barca physios. The fullback for the Lionesses couldn’t even walk down the tunnel. Instead, she hobbled towards the changing room in obvious pain.
Only a few days after the news about Leah Williamson’s ACL, everyone involved with England had the same initial worries. Even Sarina Wiegman, who was watching, would have been worried at the thought of losing yet another defense.
But Bronze came back before the end of the game to watch the rest of the game from the bench. He was seen smiling and laughing with his friends. Barcelona won in the end by a score of 1-0, giving them a slight edge before Thursday’s repeat, which will decide who will go to the Champions League final in June. Fears that Bronze might not be on England’s World Cup team have been eased by videos shared on social media after the game. In one, she is seen walking easily and shaking hands with Chelsea players.
In another, she is seen talking with England teammates Keira Walsh and Lauren James while smiling and, perhaps more importantly, able to put pressure on her knee. After the game, Barcelona coach Jonatan Giraldez also gave a good update on Bronze’s health.

“At first, Lucy was a little worried about her injury because it hurt her knee, but now she’s feeling much better about it,” he said in his news conference after the game. She felt pain in her knee, but I think she’s fine now. I was talking to her right after the game. It was scary at first, but now I think she’s fine.”
All of this suggests that Bronze might be able to play in the second leg at Camp Nou on Thursday, but Giraldez is expected to give a more detailed update when he next talks to the media on Wednesday. If she can get through that game without getting hurt, England fans will have one less injury worry to worry about with only one month left until Sarina Wiegman picks her team for the World Cup playoffs.
