Paige Buecker's Injury

UConn confirmed on Wednesday that women’s basketball player Paige Bueckers tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee on Monday, ruling her out for the 2022-23 season.

According to the school’s release, Bueckers tore her ACL after injuring her knee in a pickup basketball game. The news release did not specify where in the world the Hopkins, Minnesota native was playing when he got hurt. The injury was to the same knee that had sidelined her for a long period of time the previous year.

This upcoming Friday, she will be having surgery at UConn Health in Farmington, Connecticut. After the operation, we’ll know more about how long her rehabilitation will take. Bueckers revealed that she is relying on God to help her get through this difficult time in a statement uploaded to her Instagram account.

It’s “so so crazy” because after “you fight so hard to get back healthy, you feel stronger than ever, and you are playing your best basketball and with one sudden movement it all switches,” Bueckers wrote.

It’s tough trying to make sense of it all at the moment, but I can’t help but believe that God is using me as a living example of how much you can do when you have God on your side. Perhaps a youngster who has recently undergone an ACL reconstruction or other invasive medical procedure can find inspiration in this tale.

And the fears that I won’t get back to where I was can mean much more to me than the prayers and love, she said. God planted a vision in my mind, and if I have to face a nightmare to realize it, so be it.

Having led UConn to the women’s Final Four, rookie sensation Brianna Bueckers was named the unanimous national player of the year for 2020-21. In that season, she scored 20.1, dished out 5.9 dimes, and swiped 2.3 steals a game.

After sustaining a tibial plateau fracture and torn meniscus in his left knee in early December, Bueckers missed 19 games last season but still managed to help lead the Huskies to the national championship game, where they ultimately lost to South Carolina. At the end of the season, her stat line read 14.6 points, 4.0 boards, and 3.9 dimes per game.

UConn head coach Geno Auriemma released a statement saying, “We’re all devastated for Paige.” This is a disappointing setback after all her hard work over the offseason to improve her strength and health. It’s a shame that this has happened to Paige since she’s not just a great basketball player, but also a great person and teammate.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, UConn will have lost 52% of their scoring production without Christyn Williams, Evina Westbrook, and now Bueckers in the lineup for the upcoming season.

Azzi Fudd and Caroline Ducharme, both of whom underwent left hip surgery in April, are the Huskies’ top returning scorers. Ayanna Patterson (No. 4) and Isuneh Brady (No. 5) are two of the best incoming recruits in the country, and UConn has both of them.
