Sam Haggerty Injury

Today, the Mariners made a number of roster changes, including the promotion of infielder Abraham Toro from Triple-A Tacoma. Due to a left groin strain, infielder/outfielder Sam Haggerty has been placed on the 10-day injured list, and he will be taking his place. Also, left-handed pitcher Justus Sheffield has been named the team’s “29th man” for both games today.

Haggerty, 28 at the time, left last night’s game in the ninth inning due to an injury and had to be helped off the field. The Mariners have made it to the Wild Card round, but Haggerty won’t be able to join the team until at least the American League Division Series because of his placement on the injured list today. Haggerty is probably done for the year, therefore it might not matter if the club makes it late into October, as Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.

Haggerty, who was released by Seattle by way of an outright waiver at the end of last season, had a successful season despite the disappointing conclusion. His.207/.265/.321 batting line and 66 wRC+ in 59 career MLB games didn’t inspire much confidence.

He started the year strong in the minors and was recalled to the major league squad in the middle of May due to his play. He ended up playing in 83 games at the major league level and making 201 plate appearances. Five times he hit a home run, and he swiped 13 bases to go along with his.256/.335/.403 hitting line and 114 wRC+.

He primarily played in the outfield but did make brief appearances at second and third base. Haggerty’s work on the grass has been praised by advanced stats, with the outfielder being credited with five Outs Above Average, eight Defensive Runs Saved, and a 6.2 Ultimate Zone Rating this season. His great play in all areas of the game led to 1.5 WAR, according to FanGraphs, despite his short playing time.

Haggerty will still have four years of club control remaining after this upcoming offseason, so Seattle can keep him around at extremely reasonable rates if they expect him to maintain his current level of production. Since Mitch Haniger and Adam Frazier are both eligible for free agency this coming offseason, Seattle’s outfield composition is somewhat in flux at the moment.

Their 2023 roster consists of Julio Rodriguez, Jesse Winker, utility man Dylan Moore, and question marks like Jarred Kelenic, Kyle Lewis, and Taylor Trammell. In the near future, that team will compete in the Wild Card round, with the goal of advancing to the next round so that Haggerty can make a comeback.

The Seattle Mariners claimed Haggerty off waivers on January 10, 2020. Haggerty started off well with the Mariners, going on an 8-game hitting streak, and finished the year slashing. .260/.315/.400 over 13 games with 4 SBs.

At Oriole Park at Camden Yards on April 13, 2021, Haggerty became just the second Mariner to blast a home run to Eutaw Street, joining Ken Griffey Jr. Because of tendinitis in his right shoulder, Haggerty went on the 60-day disabled list on June 7, 2021. Haggerty was outright removed from the 40-man roster on October 22.

Haggerty started the 2022 season in AAA with the Tacoma Rainiers after being invited to Mariners Spring Training off the roster. Between May 22 and June 17, and then again beginning on June 29, he spent time with the Seattle Mariners. Haggerty blasted the first Mariners inside-the-park home run in 15 years on July 14, 2022.
