Jameis Winston, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, made his preseason debut on Friday night against the Los Angeles Chargers, but coach Dennis Allen decided to bench him after just one series.
On the Saints’ opening drive, Winston completed all four of his passes for a total of 59 yards, moving the team down the field. Also making his preseason debut, running back Alvin Kamara contributed two carries for 19 yards, the second of which was a 13-yard gain that carried the pile all the way to the 1-yard line, where Saints running back Mark Ingram scored the first of his two touchdowns in the team’s 27-10 victory.
In a game, “I wanted to get Jameis out there,” Allen said. “It’s been a while since he’s been there, and he didn’t get any practice time before the game versus Green Bay. Since Jarvis Landry is still learning our system, having him run out and make some plays in the Dome was a great way to break him in.”
After that, the Saints started taking off their offensive starters left and right, starting with the entire offensive line and ending with Winston being replaced on the next series. However, the speed was insufficient to prevent harm. Trevor Penning, a first-round pick in 2022 and the starting left tackle, was taken off with a toe injury.
When wideout Tre’Quan Smith went down trying to make a catch in the second quarter, the ball deflected off his hands and into teammate Marquez Callaway‘s arms for a 24-yard gain, injuring Smith’s shoulder. Allen has promised an assessment of both parties. The situation has not changed, as far as I know.

Late in the game, defensive tackle Albert Huggins was also carted off, and both wide receiver Kirk Merritt and defensive tackle Malcolm Roach visited the injury tent, with Roach eventually returning to action.
Winston, who sat out the first two preseason games with a sprained right foot, seemed to have returned to full participation in practice this week and had already shaken off the rust. He completed passes of 20 and 15 yards to Landry, and he completed a pass of 19 yards to first-round draft pick Chris Olave.
“I thought he was confident in the pocket, and I thought he was decisive with his reads,” Allen said. “I was very impressed by the plays where he really went for it and rifled the ball in from close range. It was heartening to witness.”
Winston hasn’t returned to the Caesars Superdome since tearing his left ACL on Halloween of last year. After not finishing the previous season, he expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to return. I just kept thanking the Lord, ‘Thank you, thank you,’ for letting me be back on the field in front of these supporters in the same area I was carried off,” Winston recalled.
Penning sat out his first year of college as a Northern Iowa Panther by wearing a red shirt. Penning played in and started all 15 games for UNI last season despite being a redshirt sophomore. During his redshirt junior season (played in the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States).
he started five games at left tackle and one at right guard. Penning was regarded as one of the top offensive tackles and FCS prospects for the 2022 NFL Draft when he suited up for the University of Oregon Ducks that upcoming 2021 fall. Jared Penning, Penning’s younger brother, has been the Panthers’ starting left guard next to him since the redshirt sophomore season.
