Gio Reyna, a player for Borussia Dortmund and the United States international, was taken off with an injury concern during the United States’ match against Saudi Arabia. The name Giovanni Reyna is becoming linked with extended absences due to injuries.
The US national and Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder has been out for long stretches of time before, most recently last year when he was taken off in the 28th minute with a thigh injury. In April of that same season, Reyna once again limped off the field with muscular troubles that would keep him out until well into the start of the new campaign.
Concerns that the player has sustained another injury during today’s game versus Saudi Arabia. After only 30 minutes on the field, Reyna was replaced by the young American who promptly left the field through the tunnel. After further investigation, the US national team has determined that Reyna was indeed experiencing muscle tightness at the time of the replacement and that the decision to remove him from the game was made as a precaution.
It is too early to tell how serious the injury is, but with the World Cup in Qatar quickly approaching, it is certainly causing concern for the United States national team. Seeing their already vast list of injured players grow even longer is bad news for Borussia Dortmund.
The loss of Reyna is more devastating given that team leader Marco Reus is also out. With the Dortmund captain out for three to four weeks, Reyna would have been one of the players counted on to step in. When Reyna is hurt, both his club and country will be keeping a careful eye on the situation in the hopes that his recovery time will be minimal.
