Yordan Alvarez

On Friday night during the game against the Braves in Atlanta, Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez became ill on the field, left the game immediately, and was taken to a local hospital.

After the Astros’ 6-2 loss, manager Dusty Baker noted that the smoke from the Braves’ pyrotechnics at Trust Park made it difficult for Alvarez to breathe.

“The physicians are examining him right now,” Baker shared. His vital signs, according to them, are normal. He reports feeling fine, but we must nevertheless take him to the doctor. All he had was trouble breathing, and the smoke from the fireworks only made things worse.

After the bottom of the fifth inning, with two outs, Alvarez walked off the field. Rookie Braves outfielder Vaughn Grissom took time out of the game to have an athletic trainer check on him after fouling a ball off his foot.

At that point, Alvarez, who is hitting.295 with 31 home runs and 77 RBIs for Houston, bolted for the visitor’s dugout.

Baker expressed relief that they had managed to free him at that time. I noticed him in the dugout and gave him a wave. In a way, it was a terrifying situation. Literally, anything is possible. Apparently, his condition is stable at the time.

Baker claimed that no one in the Astros’ dugout realized that Alvarez, an AL All-Star this year and the 2019 Rookie of the Year, was in trouble.

We didn’t see anything,” Baker added. When I looked up, he was there in the dugout. Then, the emergency crew arrived and brought him to the hospital after we went into emergency action to figure out what was wrong. Since Alvarez has left, Mauricio Dubon has moved to the center and Chas McCormick has moved to the left.

The loss of Alvarez for any period of time would be devastating for Houston, as he leads the AL in on-base percentage and ranks second in home runs, slugging percentage, OPS, and runs. With a record of 77–44, the Astros sit atop the American League and look ready to make another deep playoff run. The previous year, they were defeated by Atlanta in the World Series.

Baker remarked, “He is a really important element of this team.” Our big boy in the middle, we can’t afford to lose him. We’re considering bringing him back; here’s crossing our fingers that he wakes up tomorrow in good health. The Associated Press’s reporting was used in this article.

Career

With his 11th home run, Alvarez contributed to an Astros’ victory streak of 11. The home run, which came in his 27th game of the season, surpassed his previous best of 11 home runs in 30 games set in his rookie season of 2019. On June 2, 2022, Alvarez signed a six-year, $115,000,000 contract extension with the Astros, which bought out his final three free-agent years and kept him with the organization through the 2028 season.

During the week of June 2–5, he played in six games and hit.565,.630, and 1.217 with two walks, four home runs, eight runs batted in, and one strikeout. On June 6, he received his first of several Player of the Week awards from the American League.

Alvarez left the game on June 29 against the New York Mets. He was injured when he collided with shortstop Jeremy Péa while both players were racing after a fly ball hit by Dominic Smith and had to be taken off the field.

For the month of June, Alvarez was recognized as the AL Player of the Month for the first time in his career. Over the course of 23 games, his batting average was. At the plate, he hit.418/.510/.835/1.346 and drove in 28 runs with 4 2Bs, 1 3B, 9 HRs, and 28 RBIs. He topped the AL in hitting, OBP, slugging, OPS, and RBI while placing fourth in the AL in home runs.
