On Wednesday, Rafael Devers and the Boston Red Sox reached an agreement on an 11-year, $331 million contract extension. After losing JD Martinez and Xander Bogaerts during the summer, Boston made the transaction. The Red Sox now have a player they can centre their future plans around.

According to ESPN Stats & Info on Twitter, once the contract is finalised, it will be the wealthiest deal in Red Sox history and the most for a third baseman in MLB history. But did the Red Sox choose wisely when they gave Rafael Devers a contract extension?

Rafael Devers Is a True Superstar

Devers appears to have been active for some time. People frequently overlook the fact that he is only 26 years old. He might have easily taken a shot on himself during his contract season, similar to what Aaron Judge did. Since Judge was approaching his 30th offseason, one could argue that his strategy was significantly riskier.

Rafael Devers

Rafael Devers, though, accepted a hefty offer from Boston and signed a contract.

Third baseman Devers has six major league seasons of slashing.283/.342/.512 with an OPS of.854. For the Red Sox in 2022, he had a staggering.295/.358/.521 slash line,.879 OPS, and 27 home runs. In 2021, he previously hit 38 home runs. Devers also has experience playing pepper with Fenway Park’s Green Monster. He’s a doubles specialist who frequently drives in many runs.

With this agreement, Devers has the opportunity to establish himself as the franchise’s real face. In prior seasons, Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts have arguably served as the Red Sox’s face. But without a doubt, Devers’ time has come now.

Red Sox Got the Job Done

Just a few weeks ago, it was rumoured that an extension between the Red Sox and Rafael Devers was not close to being agreed upon. But it’s evident that the Red Sox wanted this to be finished since they made the required preparations.

Long-term agreements always include some risk. Rafael Devers was younger than the prominent free agents who signed large contracts this offseason. This action is far less dangerous in comparison.

Devers is an excellent attacking player. Although he has improved, it should be noted that his defence can be suspect at times. At some time, the Red Sox might decide to shift Devers to first base or possibly the designated hitter position. Devers didn’t get an 11-year, $331 million contract because of his defence.

So, he’ll probably hang out at the hot corner for the time being. As was already noted, he has shown growth in the role.

Rafael Devers will continue to succeed thanks to his attacking strategy. It wouldn’t be shocking to see him continue to put up exceptional numbers even later in his deal.

Final Thoughts and Grade

Rafael Devers and Boston avoided arbitration on Tuesday with a 1-year, $17.5 million contract, angering Red Sox supporters. Fans began to question whether an extension would ever be completed.

Boston did a fantastic job of making sure that they ultimately got their guy. Devers is a genuine foundational piece that will support the Red Sox’s long-term ability to contend in the challenging AL East.

Rafael Devers, the Red Sox, and the entire city of Boston stand to gain from this agreement. The Red Sox had to make the transaction, despite the cost.
