White Sox

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Chicago White Sox are allegedly interested in a trade for infielder Nicky Lopez of the Kansas City Royals. On Tuesday, KC reached an agreement to send Adalberto Mondesito to the Boston Red Sox. The Royals are willing to trade a number of their players because they are still in the middle of a rebuild.

Rosenthal then explained Kansas City’s position on Lopez and the team’s future strategy. “Royals are hesitant to transfer Lopez because they see him as a crucial depth. The team intends to use Witt Jr. at SS, Massey at 2B, and Lopez at UT. But Lopez might start at second base if Massey isn’t read, according to a tweet from Rosenthal.

The future of the baseball team is thought to lie with Bobby Witt Jr. Throughout his time in the minor levels, he was a highly anticipated talent, and last year, he started to show hints of brilliance. He was probably a major factor in Kansas City’s confidence to trade Mondesi away.

Lopez has some potential as well, although he might prefer a job with more structure. As Rosenthal pointed out, the Royals might use him going forward as a utility player.

On the other hand, the White Sox also want to increase their offensive depth. They are talented enough to perhaps challenge for the AL Central title in 2023. But following their injury-plagued 2022 season, Chicago won’t be afraid to recruit depth. It will be intriguing to see whether a Nicky Lopez-led deal between the White Sox and Royals can be completed.
