The Mets are still adding players even after signing a sizable free-agent class led by Justin Verlander. In an effort to strengthen its pitching staff, New York reached an agreement with a former All-Star.

Robert Murray of FanSided was the first to report an agreement between Omar Narvaez and the Mets. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the contract had a player option for 2024 and was for one year. Jon Heyman, a colleague at the New York Post, later added that the deal’s value in 2023 was $8 million while the option was for $7 million.

Omar Narvaez played in 84 games in 2022 due to injury-related absences. Narvaez did, however, hit.266 with 49 RBI and 11 home runs in 2021. His first All-Star game selection was made.

James McCann, who still has two years remaining on his deal with the Mets, will be replaced by Narvaez in that position. In a season marred by injuries, McCann hit just.195 with three home runs and 18 RBI while playing in only 61 games.

After the Mets added players like Verlander, Kodai Senga, Brandon Nimmo, and David Robertson, among others, Narvaez was signed. With the addition of Narvaez, New York get a seasoned backstop who has shown he can be a threat offensively when fit.

Although Narvaez won’t receive the same accolades as Pete Alonso or Francisco Lindor, he now plays a vital part in the team’s success. Narvaez will try to go back to his offensive stats from 2021 while managing the pitching staff behind the plate as the Mets pursue a World Series. His hiring demonstrates that owner Steve Cohen is prepared to spend money in order to succeed.
