Dansby Swanson, a longstanding franchise standout for the Atlanta Braves, passed away this winter. They now have the terrible task of creating a winner without him. With that objective in mind, the team made a small depth addition on Wednesday night.

Kevin Pillar, a former outfielder with the Toronto Blue Jays, was signed by the Braves to an amateur league deal. Pillar will be paid $3 million if he joins the Braves out of spring training.

The 34-year-old outfielder hasn’t had a significant role in the majors in a while. Before suffering a shoulder injury, the new Braves outfielder began the previous campaign with the Triple-A Los Angeles Dodgers.

However, Pillar does provide a couple of things to Atlanta. First, a candidate for a comeback, particularly defensively. Pillar has a reputation for excellent center-field defense, despite his recent struggles.

An experienced presence is added by the 34-year-old for the Braves behind Michael Harris II. The 21-year-old Harris distinguished himself as the 2021 World Series Champion and was named the National League’s Rookie of the Year in 2022.

This agreement contains an intriguing quirk related to the 2021 season. Pitcher Jacob Webb of the Braves struck Pillar with a pitch while he was playing for the New York Mets. Due to many fractures in his nose, he missed considerable time.

There shouldn’t be a problem because Webb is no longer a member of the Braves organization. In any case, Atlanta may have made a very wise decision in order to return to the World Series in 2023.
