Just in time for their highly anticipated matchup against their vengeful cross-town rivals, the Los Angeles Clippers, on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Lakers pulled the trigger on the Rui Hachimura deal with the Washington Wizards. Sadly, Lakers supporters will have to wait a little longer to see their new guy wearing the purple and gold.
Hachimura won’t be able to play against the Clippers on Tuesday, the Lakers have officially confirmed, which is not surprising. Tuesday has been marked as “Coach’s Decision” for Rui’s absence.
This is not at all unexpected considering that the trade was only made official on Monday. Hachimura will now need to take a flight to Los Angeles to complete the trade process, which includes the required medical checks.
Rui might make his NBA debut if all goes as planned for the Lakers’ upcoming game against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. But since that’s still a somewhat narrow timeframe, it’s also possible that he plays in his first LA game on Saturday when the Lakers go to Boston to play the Celtics in a different rivalry game at TD Garden.
The Lakers will go on a five-game road trip starting with that contest, and Rui Hachimura is definitely going to be with his new team during that time. Hachimura has averaged 13.0 points on 48.8 percent shooting, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 24.3 minutes off the bench in 30 games with the Wizards this season.
