In 2018, Mordecai began his career in collegiate football with the Oklahoma Sooners, where he acted as Kyler Murray‘s backup. He served as a backup behind another future NFL great, Jalen Hurts, who is currently an Eagles player, the following season.
Later, in 2021, Tanner Mordecai made the decision to move to SMU, where he was able to fulfill his dream of beginning at the collegiate level. He tossed for 3,628 yards and 39 touchdowns in 12 games for the Mustangs in 2021, with 12 interceptions.
Mordecai piled up 3,524 passing yards and 33 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 12 games for the Mustangs, who finished sixth nationally in passing yards per game (322.7) and eleventh in scoring offense, in what would ultimately be his final season with SMU (36.6 points per game).

Mordecai ought to be thought of as the 2023 starting quarterback for the Badgers once his move to Wisconsin football is made official. Additionally, Graham Mertz, who is currently with the Florida Gators, will have just left for the SEC when he arrives in Madison.
