Bruins’ chase

On Wednesday night, three of the NHL’s hottest teams each lost. The New Jersey Devils had a 13-game winning streak going into their home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, but a 2-1 setback to John Tavares and company prevented them from breaking their own franchise record.

The Boston Bruins, on the other hand, went into their road game against the Florida Panthers riding a seven-game winning streak, but they ultimately fell short, 5-2. The St. Louis Blues’ own seven-game winning streak was also snapped when they were defeated 6-2 by the Buffalo Sabres at Buffalo.

Never before in NHL history have three clubs fallen on the same day while each was riding a winning streak of at least seven games (h/t to ESPN’s Arda Oca).

The Panthers scored three goals in the second period while the Bruins were unable to score, severely hurting them. Florida’s power-play effort, in which the Panthers went 3 of 7 while having the advantage, severely hurt Boston as well. On the other hand, both of the Bruins’ two goals were scored while they had a power play.

The Bruins would have been just one victory away from matching their franchise record for the best start to a season with an 18-2 record had they defeated Florida (19-2). After the game, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery talked and bemoaned some of his team’s shortcomings that contributed to the defeat (via ESPN).

Coach Jim Montgomery of Boston remarked, “We haven’t harped on it much, but (we’ve had difficulties with) turnovers and taking too many minor infractions. I thought the first period was pretty excellent, and I felt like we were resuming control of the game in the second until they scored the second goal.
