Steelers Sign Linebacker

To compensate for T.J. Watt’s absence, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed an outside linebacker to their practice squad. Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reports that the team has signed wide receiver Ryan Anderson.

Andrew Anderson, at 28 years old, was selected by the Washington Football Team in the second round in 2017. He spent four years on the team, during which time he recorded 86 tackles, 6 sacks, and 15 quarterback hits in 52 games.

Anderson will be joining Delonte Scott and Chapelle Russell on the scout team. During his news conference for Week 2, Coach Mike Tomlin expressed optimism that Watt will be back for the rest of the season. He also wouldn’t say if the reigning Defensive Player of the Year would be placed on Injured Reserve or not.

Other than Watt, the Steelers have Alex Highsmith, Malik Reed, and Jamir Jones as active outside linebackers for Week 2. One of the players on the practice squad will probably get a game call.

Washington’s Commanders picked Anderson in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He played in 52 games, starting four of them, and had 78 tackles (7 for a loss), 5 forced fumbles, 6 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, and 1 pass defense.

He joined the New York Giants for the offseason of 2021. Anderson was a first-team All-SEC pick and a semifinalist for the Butkus Award as a linebacker at the University of Alabama.

Following the 2022 NFL Draft, Denver Broncos signed Williams as an undrafted free agent but cut him during the preseason. At the collegiate level, Williams appeared in 53 games for Tennessee-Martin and started 26 of them.

He concluded his career with 99 receptions, 1,217 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns, good for seventh place in school history. Similarly, the Steelers waived receiver Jaquarii Roberson and cut tight end Justin Rigg from the practice squad.
