While Argentina continues to rejoice after Lionel Messi and the team’s World Cup victory in Qatar, French supporters are still unable to get over their heartbreaking loss.
Currently, a petition on the French website MesOpinions is collecting support as it calls for a rerun of the World Cup final between France and Argentina. It highlighted that La Albiceleste’s opening two goals shouldn’t have counted and listed two reasons why the game should be rescheduled.
Recall that France trailed Argentina 2-0 at the half until Kylian Mbappe struck twice in the closing 10 minutes of regulation time and the third goal in extra time to trigger a penalty shootout. After Ousmane Dembele fouled Angel Di Maria, Messi scored the game’s first goal from the penalty spot, and Di Maria doubled their advantage with a spectacular finish on a counterattack.
The petition claims that Messi’s penalty kick should not have been awarded since Dembele shouldn’t have been called for a foul on Di Maria. The campaign contends that Mbappe was fouled in the lead-up to the counter for the second goal.
This petition is obviously not surprising. In football, it’s really extremely typical, especially for a national team like France, which was attempting to defend its 2018 championship.

At the time of writing, the petition had amassed over 200,000 signatures. Unfortunately for its supporters, it’s unlikely that it will influence the outcome of the game in any meaningful way. Additionally, Lionel Messi and Argentina prevailed in the penalty shootout thanks to Emi Martinez’s heroics in the net.
