On Wednesday, Costa Rica played its group-stage encounter at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But things did not turn out as expected. They lost against Spain 7-0 in an embarrassing defeat.
Not that the game was that close either. Costa Rica was unable to make even one shot attempt. Since 1990, this is the first time it has occurred.
Who was the first team to be shut out of a World Cup game? when Costa Rica fell to Brazil 1-0. In 1990, Costa Rican athletes did leave the group stage. They advanced after victories over Sweden and Scotland.
Dani Olmo of RB Leipzig scored the game’s first goal in the 11th minute, giving Spain a quick advantage. Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio extended Spain’s lead ten minutes later.
Ferran Torres of Barcelona scored the first of his two goals for the day in the 31st minute. A penalty was awarded after defenseman Jordi Alba was struck in the penalty area.
In the 54th minute, Torres added his second goal to make it 4-0. In the 74th minute, his Barcelona teammate Gavi scored a goal with a slap shot. With his shot, he broke the World Cup record for the earliest goal scorer since 1954.
The Spanish were kept off the scoreboard by Costa Rica until the 90th minute. To complete the 7-0 thrashing, substitute Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata both scored goals.
On goal differential, Spain currently leads the group. On Sunday, they will play against Germany in their next game. After suffering a shocking loss to Japan earlier in the day on Wednesday, the Germans are in disbelief.
With a crucial match in the second round of the group stage approaches, Costa Rica will try to move past this defeat. They face Japan, which will want to capitalize on its previous triumph over Germany.
