The racist and cruel remarks made about Kylian Mbappe and other members of the France national football team will not be tolerated by the French Football Federation.
For those who don’t know, Mbappe and teammates Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni were the targets of online racial abuse after France’s defeat to Argentina in the World Cup championships.
Mbappe scored a hat trick to force a shootout, which France lost to Argentina on penalties. After Coman’s shot was blocked and Tchouameni‘s attempt missed the target, Les Bleus were only able to convert two of their three attempts from the ensuing position.
France denounced the behavior and vowed to take steps to get those responsible for the racial abuse and hatred directed towards its players prosecuted after learning of the incidents.
According to the French Football Federation, some members of the French national team received inappropriate racist and cruel comments on social media after the World Cup final. The FFF will lodge a complaint against their writers and condemns them.
The federation is unquestionably headed in the right direction, but it remains to be seen what other measures France will take to halt the abuse and ensure that it doesn’t happen again.
Such hatred has no place in football, period. While it’s natural that fans are upset about the World Cup’s outcomes—especially given that France was the defending champion and had a real chance to win back-to-back titles—racist behavior isn’t acceptable.
