The 18-year-old academy graduate and reserve player for Tottenham Hotspur, Alfie Devine, has reportedly signed a new contract with the club that would keep him there until 2027.
The news is just fantastic. Devine, an offensive midfielder, has emerged as one of the most exciting young players in the club, along with Troy Parrott and Dane Scarlett. He and Scarlett both played on the England U19 team that won the European Championship this summer, and he has been a mainstay in the Spurs U23s despite being only 17 years old.
Incredibly talented, he was set to join Parrott and Scarlett on a loan this summer before he went down with an injury in the preseason. There were rumors that he was considering running down his previous contract, but this is a nice indicator from Alfie that he sees a path to the Spur’s first team, and the new contract seems to be a recognition of that reality.

If Alfie is able to fully heal and return to fitness by the beginning of the new year, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go out on loan to a club in the Championship or League 1 for the remainder of the year. A good loan is in order, and I’d like to see how he performs against actual adults in a competitive league.
Formerly, Devine was a member of Liverpool’s youth program. At the age of 11, he was released, and four months later he signed with Wigan Athletic. In the fourth round of the 2019–20 FA Youth Cup, he came on as a substitute for the under-23 squad and helped them overcome Tottenham Hotspur.
He made his debut at the age of 15. At Old Trafford, he was a starter in the quarterfinal match against Manchester United. On June 6, 2020, he was officially signed by Wigan. Wigan went bankrupt a month later, and on July 28 he was transferred to Tottenham Hotspur for £300,000.
When playing for the U23s in a match against Chelsea in December 2020, Devine made a tackle on Danny Drinkwater and got into a fight with him. The two of them got red cards.
Devine made his Tottenham debut on 10 January 2021 against Marine in the FA Cup Third Round. At the start of the second half, he came on as a replacement and scored the fifth goal to seal a 5-0 victory for Tottenham. When he made his debut for Tottenham, at the age of 16 years and 163 days, he surpassed the record held by his under-18 colleague Dane Scarlett.
