Andrei Andreyevich Vasilevskiy is a Russian professional ice hockey goaltender for the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL). At the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, the Lightning selected him 19th overall in the first round.
He earned the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goaltender in the 2018–19 season and has led the league in wins for five straight seasons (2017–18 to 2021–22). In addition, he led the Lightning to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2020 and 2021, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the 2021 playoffs and setting the NHL record for most wins in a single postseason (18 in 2020).
With a 4-1 win in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final against the New York Rangers on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Lightning tied the series at one game apiece.
Andrei Vasilevskiy, the Lightning’s goalie, put forth a fantastic performance. The goaltender held on for the win after shutting out the Rangers for over two sessions and stopping a barrage of Rangers shots in the final four minutes of the third period.
On 34 Rangers shots, he finished with 33 saves.
Pat Maroon’s goal at 2:38 of the first period gave Tampa Bay a one-goal advantage. Maroon’s goal was his third of the series. At 13:07 of the second period, Nikita Kucherov added to the lead with a goal. It was his series-leading eighth goal.
Kucherov has has a goal in three straight games.
In the third period, Steven Stamkos scored the game-winning goal. With his goal, he gave Tampa Bay a 3-0 lead that looked quite insurmountable.
With the help of Artemi Panarin, New York scored on the power play. The Rangers’ comeback attempt, however, was unsuccessful. After New York withdrew Igor Shesterkin, Game 3 hero Ondrej Palat scored an empty-net goal in the dying seconds.
On 30 shots, Shesterkin made 27 saves.
In order to proceed to the Stanley Cup Final, both clubs just need two wins in the following two games. The Lightning is aiming for their third straight Final appearance, while the Rangers are attempting to make their first participation since 2014.
Tampa Bay fell behind 2-0 in the series at home but has since won two straight games at Amalie Arena, extending their home winning streak to six games.
Game 5 will be played at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday. The Stanley Cup Final will be played between the victor of this series and the Colorado Avalanche.
Vasilevskiy was awarded the Order of Honour on May 27, 2014, for winning the 2014 IIHF World Championship with the Russian senior squad.
Vasilevskiy was named to Russia’s World Cup team on March 2, 2016. Vladislav Namestnikov and Nikita Kucherov, both of the Lightning, joined Vasilevskiy on the ice. From September 17 until October 1, 2016, the competition was held in Toronto.
Vasilevskiy was named to Russia’s World Ice Hockey Championships team on April 9, 2017. Teammate Nikita Kucherov joined Vasilevskiy. Vasilevskiy assisted Russia in winning a bronze medal in the bronze medal game against Finland on May 21, 2017. Vasilevskiy was also chosen as the tournament’s best goalkeeper.
