The Giants almost finished a practice session without losing a player to injury. Thursday after a joint practice with the Jets, second-year outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari was taking part in the post-practice conditioning running with his teammates when he was forced to halt and came up limping. He limped off the field with the assistance of two trainers and medics and into the team’s headquarters.
It has been determined that Ojulari has suffered a calf injury. Despite the difficulty and persistence of calf problems, an MRI check showed no structural damage, therefore he should be alright. Ojulari is unlikely to be allowed to participate in any practices coming up to the season opener on September 11.
Ojulari’s hamstring injury kept him out of action for the first three weeks of training camp. In 2021, he recorded eight sacks, which was the most ever by a rookie for the squad.
Since starting edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux will be out for three to four weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee, the Giants might use what Ojulari brings to the field in Sunday’s preseason win over the Bengals. The Giants are crossing their fingers that Thibodeaux will recover in time for their season opener on September 11 against the Titans in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Giants’ defense did not show any signs of extracurricular activity throughout this practice. I mean, it was just like any other practice,” defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence explained. Both of us realized that our ultimate goal is an improvement. Here to compete, to help each other grow, and, of course, to win. You know, not always going out and beating up my boys. As fun as it is to beat up on other people, I have to do it.
Before the game, Giants coach Brian Daboll urged his team to maintain discipline. “We’re not looking to go out there and fight,” Daboll added. I believe it is essential to have the opportunity to train with one another. We hope this goes on for some time before anything similar happens again.
Respect one another, help one another get better, and play some football. I have no desire to watch a UFC or boxing bout live, despite my deep appreciation for both sports. Pure and simple football competition.

Newly acquired strong safety Olaijah Griffin picked off Jets quarterback Mike White. Coach Robert Saleh of the New York Jets was reportedly someone Daboll met during the NFL owners meeting in March.
The group “hung around by the pool for a little bit and just started discussing football,” as Daboll put it. You should regard him as a man first and a coach second. Both Daboll and Saleh had spent time in the NFL, with Daboll primarily coaching the offense and Saleh the defense, thus both men were familiar with one another.
“They play fast,” Daboll remarked. “Their game is very rough. There’s a zoning element to their play style. They act like men, at least for a while. Typically, they’ll employ a four-man rush, including blitzes. When I was a player with the Bills, we faced him. I saw him in San Francisco, and my impression of how he deals with pressure and conflict has only grown since then.
WR Sterling Shepard did not take part in any 7-on-7 or team drills on the day after returning from the physically unable to perform list and participating in his first summer practice. We’ll keep working up his intensity, Daboll assured. Receiving back Bailey Gaither was grabbed off waivers by the Giants from the Ravens on Wednesday, but he was released the following day after failing a physical.
