Justin Fields

On Thursday night at Soldier Field, the Chicago Bears were about to score the game’s opening touchdown when they were intercepted by the Washington Commanders. Things were going swimmingly until quarterback Justin Fields’ ball to tight end Cole Kmet went awry.

Bears quarterback Brandon Fields threw an interception on second down and goal from the five-yard line on the eleventh play of the team’s second possession of the game after his pass ricocheted off Washington defensive tackle Efe Obada’s facemask. Jonathan Allen, a tackle for the Commanders, dove to his right and picked up the pass, keeping the Bears scoreless.

Even though Fields couldn’t believe what he’d done, he still managed to make several more terrible throws. Rookie running back Khalil Herbert broke off a 64-yard run on the Bears’ next drive, bringing them back into scoring position.

On second down and goal, Fields missed a wide-open Ryan Griffin on the right side of the end zone by throwing the ball too much behind him. Griffin extended his arm, but the speed of the ball prevented him from catching it with just one hand. After two more plays, the Bears’ offense was halted on the one-yard line by the Commanders’ defense. Once more, there is no result.

Both times, Fields couldn’t believe it, but that’s been the Bears’ luck lately. They’ve dropped three of their previous four contests. Fields played admirably in last week’s game against the Minnesota Vikings when the Bears faced off in the NFC North. He completed 15 of 21 passes for a score and added 47 yards on the ground. But the Vikings prevailed in the end.

Earlier, the Bears had been shut out by the New York Giants in East Rutherford, New Jersey, 20-12. Even though the Bears got within striking distance of the end zone on multiple occasions, the Giants’ defense was able to prevent any touchdowns by kicking two field goals from 22 and 29 yards by Bears kicker Michael Badgley.

The Commanders have had their own problems moving the football through the first five weeks of the season, so Fields should have opportunities to redeem himself later in the game.

Fields beat the Detroit Lions by a score of 24-14 in his first career start the following week. He was successful on 11-of-17 throws for 209 yards and threw an interception on a deflected pass. The Bears defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 20-9 in Week 5 after Fields was appointed the starter for the rest of the season.

Fields completed 12 of 20 passes for 111 yards and threw his first touchdown pass to tight end Jesper Horsted. The Bears lost by a score of 38-3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 7 as a result of five turnovers committed by Fields (three interceptions and two lost fumbles).

The next week, against the San Francisco 49ers, Fields had his first 100-yard rushing game, throwing for 175 yards and a touchdown and also scoring a rushing touchdown. As a result of an interception thrown by Fields on the Bears’ final drive, they lost the game 22-33.

Fields threw for a career-high 291 yards in the Bears’ Monday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers the following week, but despite rebounding to give the Bears a 27-26 lead in the fourth quarter, the Steelers pulled away to win 27-29.

Fields went out of the game in the third quarter of Week 11’s matchup with the Baltimore Ravens because of a rib injury. In the 13-16 defeat, Dalton came in as a substitute for him. Fields left the game with several cracked ribs and will miss the Bears’ next two games. After missing two games with an ankle injury, he played in Week 14’s loss to the Green Bay Packers.
