Cameron Norrie

To advance to the Wimbledon semi-finals, British No. 1 Cameron Norrie needed five sets to defeat Belgian No. 2 David Goffin. Novak Djokovic overcame Jannik Sinner 3-6 7-5 2-6 6-3 7-5 earlier in the day to reach the semi-finals of the men’s singles at the Australian Open.

Only Andy Murray, Tim Henman, and Roger Taylor have advanced further in men’s singles at the All England Club in the Open Era than Norrie, who is one of four British guys. It took British No. 1, David Goffin, three hours and 28 minutes to break open his game against him, but Goffin showed courage and determination to prevail.

No. 1 Court’s energetic audience inspired him to serve out the match at the first opportunity, and he did it with aplomb. A beaming Norrie exclaimed on the court, “I’m so thrilled to have made it through with such an amazing group of people here.”

From the start, it wasn’t going my way; I didn’t feel well or feel the ball, and that’s all David’s fault. I was becoming frustrated because I couldn’t locate my game, but I was able to maintain my composure thanks to the support of the audience.

In the end, “It was all adrenaline, I just used my legs to put the ball on the court,” I said. “It was a terrific feeling to cross the finish line.” With a win over Djokovic in the quarterfinals, Norrie has a chance to advance to the championship match for the fourth time in a row.

Djokovic won 6-2, 6-1, in straight sets, at the Nitto ATP finals in 2021, their only previous meeting on Tour.

For Norrie, it’s been a week of firsts, and he can’t wait to see what the future holds. “I’m going to love that,” he remarked of the match versus Djokovic. Let me know if he’ll take it and I’ll see if we can get back behind each other.” It’s something I’m excited about.”
