Carlos Rodon Injury

Even though the Giants are likely going to wind up missing the playoffs this season, there is still a lot at stake for the team in September, especially for players like Carlos Rodón who are set to become free agents after the season.

Currently finishing off one of the most dominant seasons ever by a starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, Rodón shows every sign of wanting to go out with a bang. On Sunday afternoon at Oracle Park, the Giants defeated the Phillies 5-3 in a walk-off, and the 29-year-old left-hander secured his first career 200-strikeout season by striking out 10 over six scoreless innings.

To quote Rodón’s manager, “it doesn’t really tell the story of how good a player is, but it surely tells the story of how durable a guy is,” when asked about Rodón’s milestone. A breakthrough is in sight as Carlos nears the end of his race. This is evidence of his remarkable longevity, reliability, and general excellence this season.

The 27-start Rodón has decreased his ERA to 2.92, and his 201 strikeouts this season are second in the Majors behind only the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole (204). This year, he has tied Tim Lincecum and Jason Schmidt for the most strikeouts by a Giants pitcher in a season (9 each).

To quote Rodón’s manager, “it doesn’t really tell the story of how good a player is, but it surely tells the story of how durable a guy is,” when asked about Rodón’s milestone. “Now that Carlos is getting closer to the conclusion, things are looking up. This proves he’s had a fantastically long, reliable, and impressive season.

With a 2.92 ERA through 27 starts this season, Rodón is second in the Majors in strikeouts (201 to Yankees ace Gerrit Cole’s 221). (204). This season, he has nine outings with ten or more strikeouts, tying Tim Lincecum and Jason Schmidt for the most by a Giants pitcher since 1900.

In other words, “I’ve never done it. For Rodón, whose previous high was 185 strikeouts for the White Sox in 2017, this is an impressive accomplishment. Keep on since there are still a few games to play.

The Giants’ scoreboard displayed a congrats message after Rodón struck out Segura with a low slider, marking the milestone, and the sellout crowd again gave him a standing ovation after he escaped a jam by getting Stott to swing through a 98 mph fastball on his 106th pitch of the day.

From April 9 through April 26, Rodón struck out a total of 38 batters, the most by a Giants pitcher in his first four appearances of a season since 1901.
