Conor Benn will not fight Chris Eubank Jr. on Saturday because he failed a drug test.
An unfavourable result in a random doping test for Benn cast doubt on the fight, and Matchroom has now decided to postpone it after the British Boxing Board of Control withdrew its backing.
Benn had a negative clomifene test result in August from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, but he had subsequently passed a test by the UK Anti-Doping Agency and was cleared of all charges.
The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) refused to approve the match, so the fight was called off after several conversations.
After talking with numerous stakeholders, we’ve decided to officially postpone the fight between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn, according to a statement.
“It is evident that the British Boxing Board of Control lacked due process and made a procedurally faulty conclusion when they withdrew their sanctioning. We want to pursue that as a legal matter between the promoters and the Board.
“However, while there are legal avenues to enable the bout to proceed as scheduled, we do not believe it is in the combatants’ or the sport’s overall interests for them to be followed at this late point. We take our responsibilities as promoters very seriously, so a thorough investigation will now be required. At this moment, we won’t be commenting further; information on ticket holders’ reimbursements will come later.
