Craig Kimbrel

Dodgers fans were treated to another wild ride on Friday night. In the 9th inning, in particular. There have been some recent games in which the side was up by 10 or 5 or 3 runs and still had trouble getting the 27th and final out.

It appears that Craig Kimbrel has crumbled more often than not as the game’s last outing approaches for the Los Angeles Angels closer. The Dodgers sent in Kimbrel on Sunday to preserve a 5-2 advantage. In the end, he was able to salvage the game, but it was far from his best effort.

The experienced pitcher surrendered two runs on 29 pitches while recording three outs. With the bases loaded and the tying and winning runs on the board, Kimbrel let up three hits and a walk after getting two fast outs.

A three-out, 30-pitch performance isn’t good enough.” Craig is aware of this, according to Dave Roberts, who spoke after the game. In addition, after yet another shaky outing, Dodger manager Dave Roberts reiterated his belief that closer Craig Kimbrel will continue in the role for the time being.

When he is efficient, dominating the ball, and getting the swing and miss, there is one outing. To get three outs, we’ll need to go up to about 30 pitches on the following one… He’s a lot closer than we are.

In the end, though, it’s a performance that really matters—especially near the end of the game. Craig knows it better than anybody else… He’ll have to keep working on a few things if he wants to improve his efficiency and effectiveness. These are the hard realities.”

The Views of the Fans Are Shared. Kimbrel, an 8-time All-Star, has seen his fortunes rise and fall throughout the course of the season. While he has only blown three saves all year, he has surrendered 14 runs while trying to save them. And the more you study the numbers, the more mysterious they become.

As of this writing, Kimbrel has a 4.37 ERA (17 earned runs over 35 innings) in 37 games, but his FIP stands at an impressive 2.01. A bad run of luck might explain why he’s having a rough season.

Some of that terrible luck may be due to the fact that he allows over 10 hits per nine innings (9.8 H9) and walks roughly four per nine innings (3.9 BB9). There have been 50 strikeouts in 35 innings, but the batters who have made contact with the ball are hitting better than.400 so far this season regardless of how many he has struck out (.402 BAbip).

Whatever the stats say, Dave Roberts will not be taking over for Kimbrel as the closer. The answer isn’t yet, at least. Despite the fact that it’s not always aesthetically pleasing, the pitcher is still getting the job done on a regular basis. He’s going to need a lot more aid, and he’s going to need it now more than ever.

Kimbrel inked a three-year, $43 million contract with the Chicago Cubs on June 7th, 2019. On June 27, he was promoted from the Triple-A Iowa Cubs to the Cubs’ major league roster and collected his first season save against Atlanta.

When his knee began to hurt, he was put on an anti-inflammatory drug called IL. The Cubs’ struggling bullpen received a boost when he was reinstated from the injured list on August 18, 2019.

After appearing in 23 games, he went 0–4, recorded 13 saves, and posted a 6.53 ERA. He finished the 2020 season with a 5.28 ERA, 28 strikeouts, and 12 walks in 15+1/3 innings as a result of the pandemic.

He moved up to 11th place on the all-time saves list after the Cubs beat the Pirates 4-1 on May 26, 2021, in Pittsburgh. On June 24, 2021, Kimbrel, Zach Davies, Ryan Tepera, and Andrew Chafin pitched a combined no-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
