Cordarrelle Patterson Rumbles Falcons To 27-23 Victory Over Seahawks!

The Atlanta Falcons defeated the Seattle Seahawks 27-23 on Sunday, thanks in large part to a career-high 141-yard rushing performance from Cordarrelle Patterson and a second-half touchdown pass of 14 yards from Marcus Mariota to rookie Drake London.

The Falcons avoided starting 0-3 for the second time in three seasons thanks to Patterson’s second-half rushing effort of 107 yards. As Mariota racked up yards through the air in the first half, Patterson churned out big gains on the ground in the second.

In the season opener against New Orleans, Patterson had 120 yards, which he then surpassed in Week 2. In the second quarter, his 17-yard touchdown run pushed Atlanta ahead 17-10.

In the waning seconds of the third quarter, Mariota threw a touchdown pass to London, putting Atlanta ahead for good. He finished the game 13 of 20 for 223 yards passing. Kyle Pits caught five passes for 87 yards, while London only caught three for 54.

Geno Smith, a quarterback for Seattle, passed for 325 yards and two touchdowns, but his pass was picked off by Atlanta’s Richie Grant on fourth-and-18 from Seattle’s 38 with 1:30 left. It was the first time since the 2014 season that Smith threw for more than 300 yards.

Two of Smith’s touchdown passes went to DK Metcalf and Will Dissly, both of whom scored for the first time this season in the first half.

When Seattle had a fourth-and-2 at the Atlanta 7, the choice was made to kick a 25-yard field goal from Jason Myers. At the end of the timeout, the Seahawks elected to punt the ball rather than try for a first down.

The Falcons appeared ready to seal the deal midway in the fourth quarter, but a mistake by Mariota gave Seattle a chance to tie the game.

The fumble occurred with 5:12 left on the clock after Mariota and Tyson Allegier botched a handoff. Uchenna Nwosu of Seattle pounced on the fumble, giving the Seahawks an opportunity to drive for the game-winning score.

Smith completed several crucial passes that moved the Seahawks inside Atlanta’s territory. The Seahawks’ screen throw to Rashaad Penny was nullified by a significant holding call committed by Damien Lewis, which kept the Falcons from moving inside their own 10-yard line. On third down, Grady Jarrett sacked Smith, and on fourth down, Smith’s ball to Tyler Lockett was an overthrow that Grant picked intercepted.

At 6:42 of the fourth quarter, the game was halted for almost five minutes due to what appeared to be a drone flying over Lumen Field. There was a timeout during which players were sent to the bench.

Even Saturday night’s game between Washington and Stanford, across town, was delayed for a few minutes due to a drone.

In Seattle’s absence of cornerbacks Artie Burns, Sidney Jones, and Justin Coleman, the Seahawks’ secondary was noticeably weaker than usual. Both Burns and Jones were listed as questionable on the final injury report despite the fact that Burns was trying to return from a groyne ailment. Due to a calf ailment, Coleman was sidelined last week.

During Seattle’s first offensive series, they also lost Travis Homer, a key contributor on special teams and as a backup running back. Homer had a 7-yard carry but was ruled out after leaving with a rib injury.
