Romero Injury

In Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Cuti Romero was a key contributor for Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs fans should remember that game well, as this will likely be the last time they see him for a long. As Football. Alasdair London’s Gold reports, that Romero will be out for “three to four weeks” with a muscular injury he sustained during the game.

According to Gold, he could make it back for the Manchester City game on September 10. Still, he may be sidelined for Spurs’ September 6/7 Champions League opener against Borussia Dortmund as well as home games against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United, and Fulham.

Furthermore, given the irregular nature of injury recovery times, any setback may put him in jeopardy of missing the games against City and Leicester, as well as the second Champions League matchup. Not until the 24th of September do we have our first international break.

This stinks, and the ramifications for the Spurs’ starting lineup are unclear at this time. Davinson Sanchez, Romero’s exact backup, is the most logical choice. However, we also know that last season’s Sanchez-and-Emerson Royal partnership was a touch uhhhhhh. Is it possible that Clement Lenglet’s role could change in some way? The answer is yes! Antonio Conte will be pivotal in this.

That said, Wolves, Forest, West Ham, and Fulham don’t exactly make up a “murderer’s row” of opponents. But Romero is obviously Spurs’ finest defender and missing him for any period of time majorly bites and I loathe it.

Cuti might use some good thoughts right now, so light some candles and create a healing circle.

After a long courtship, Inter Milan’s highly regarded youth Alessandro Bastoni decided to remain in his home country. It would be interesting to watch whether Spurs decide to rekindle their interest in the aftermath of Romero’s injury news, as other names, such as Josko Gvardiol of RB Leipzig and Pau Torres of Villarreal, have been touted.

However, center midfielder Oliver Skipp has resumed outside activity as he continues his rehabilitation from his most recent setback, so Conte can take heart on that front. The 21-year-old had to sit out most of last season due to an adductor injury and then missed the start of this year’s season after suffering a hairline fracture in his heel in the preseason.

Career

Romero has played for Argentina’s U20 team, earning seven caps in the 2017 South American U-20 Championship in Ecuador. While he was invited to Argentina’s training camp for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea, he was left off the team’s final roster for the competition. In September of this year, Romero received a summons to play for the U23s.

On June 3, 2021, Romero played the complete match for his country in a World Cup qualifier against Chile, marking his debut at the senior level.

Next, on June 8 against Colombia, he scored his first international goal with a thundering header after only 130 seconds of play. This goal was the fastest ever scored by an Argentine professional player, beating out Diego Maradona’s 168-second strike against Venezuela in 1985.

As the 2021 Copa AmĂŠrica approached in June, he was named to Lionel Scaloni’s final Argentina 28-man team. At the end of the campaign, when Argentina was declared the champions, Romero was named to the tournament’s All-Star Team.
