Nkunku Transfer

Claims that Chelsea has already agreed to pay France international Christopher Nkunku’s release clause at RB Leipzig have been refuted in an exclusive update provided by Fabrizio Romano.

Romano wrote in his CaughtOffside column that it is unclear how the two clubs will agree on the parameters of the trade, despite the fact that Nkunku has passed a physical with Chelsea and supposedly reached terms on his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Despite a report from the Athletic suggesting, Chelsea would exercise Nkunku’s buy-out clause in the summer of 2019, Chelsea manager Roberto Romano has stated that the west London giants have not yet made that decision and are instead planning to try to negotiate a differently structured fee with Leipzig.

According to Romano, Chelsea is close to reaching an agreement with RB Leipzig for a different structure of the deal; and not activating the release clause in June, which is in response to recent rumors of a transfer for Nkunku. This was always the intention.

On the player’s end, both the contract and the physical are satisfactory. According to Romano, CFC is doing well in what he sees as a competitive market for strikers to make what appears to be a “great” possible signing like this. In a tough market for strikers, he said, “I think it’s a terrific addition for Chelsea.”

Although Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang might suffice, for the time being, it appears that Chelsea will need to make a major addition up front for the upcoming season. Just over a year ago, the Blues spent a lot of money to recruit Romelu Lukaku, a Belgian international who is now on loan back at Inter Milan. The move clearly did not work out.

Nkunku has been excellent in the Bundesliga as of late, scoring 35 goals in all competitions for his club last season. He may be the best long-term choice to lead the line for Chelsea.

Career

RB Leipzig revealed that they have signed Nkunku to a five-year contract for a transfer fee of around €13 million plus bonuses. On August 11 he played in his first game for the club, a 3-2 DFB-Pokal triumph over VfL Osnabrück. A week later, he made his debut in the Bundesliga and scored his first professional goal on the opening day of the 2019-20 season, a 4-0 rout of regional rivals Union Berlin.

Nkunku aided his team to a 5-0 win over Schalke 04 on February 22, 2020, with four assists. Thus, he joined Szabolcs Huszti as the only player in recent Bundesliga history with four assists in a single match.

Nkunku scored a three-trick for Leipzig against Manchester City in a 2021-22 UEFA Champions League group stage encounter on September 15th. He became the club’s first player to ever record a hat trick in the Champions League.

Nkunku scored twice as Hertha BSC was routed 6-0 on September 25, 2021. It was the first time in his career that he had scored two braces in a single game, and it happened a week later in a win against VfL Bochum. After a 20-goal season and 13-assist campaign in the 2021-22 Bundesliga season, he was named the league’s MVP in May of 2022.
