Dalton Schultz Injury

Dalton Schultz, a tight end for the Dallas Cowboys, went down with a knee injury late in Sunday’s 20-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. He will reportedly get an MRI to determine the extent of his injury.

The Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken reported that there is “no concern” about the structure of Schultz’s ACL, but that more information can be gained from an MRI.

Prior to his exit, Schultz caught two passes for 18 yards. A 50-yard field goal by Brett Maher won the game for Dallas, and he was forced to sit out the last offensive drive. Through the first two games of the season, he has seven receptions for 62 yards but no touchdowns.

For the upcoming 2022 season, the 26-year-old is being paid $10.9 million under the one-year franchise tag. Schultz did not show up to the Cowboys‘ optional offseason program, opting instead to attend only the required minicamp and then training camp. The year 2021 was his best ever, as he started every game and hauled in 78 passes for 808 yards and eight scores.

For a Cowboys club whose offense is already thin, losing Schultz would be devastating. QB Dak Prescott has been sidelined indefinitely after requiring thumb surgery. In training camp, Dallas wideout James Washington broke his foot. Michael Gallup, a wideout, has been attempting to recover from an ACL tear since last year. Tyron Smith, the starting left tackle, has a hamstring injury and will be sidelined until at least December.

The Cowboys anticipate having Schultz back in the lineup for their Week 10 matchup against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.

Career

Due to the unexpected departures of Jason Witten and James Hanna, the Dallas Cowboys drafted Schultz in the fourth round (137th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft to bolster their depth at tight end. Following starters Geoff Swaim and Blake Jarwin, he was the backup tight end.

Swaim’s injury in Week 11 propelled Schultz ahead of Jarwin in the pecking order, and he saw extensive blocking duty as a result. Seven of the eleven games he played in were starts, including both postseason games. To help runner Ezekiel Elliott win the NFL rushing title, he caught 12 passes for 116 yards.

Despite Geoff Swaim’s departure via free agency in 2019, Jason Witten’s return to the NFL after a season as a Monday Night Football analyst kept Schultz as the team’s third-string tight end. His season stats included 16 games, one reception for six yards, and one kickoff return for five yards.

In light of the news that Cowboys tight end Jason Witten was departing to join the Raiders in Las Vegas, Schultz now has a chance to challenge Blake Jarwin for the backup job. Schultz replaced Jarwin as the starting tight end when Jarwin tore his ACL in the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams and was out for the year.

Schultz made his NFL debut in Week 2 with a comeback 40-39 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, catching nine catches for 88 yards and scoring his first professional touchdown. Despite the loss of starting quarterback Dak Prescott in Week 5 against the New York Giants, Schultz still managed to surpass expectations by becoming just the fourth tight end in franchise history to record at least 60 receptions in a regular season (63).

He also finished with 615 receiving yards and four touchdowns. It was reported that Jason Witten will be departing the Cowboys to go with the Las Vegas Raiders, giving Schultz an opportunity to compete for the backup role behind Blake Jarwin.
