Schroder, who is still young at only 28, has fallen from favor. During his final season with the Atlanta Hawks, he established himself as a future star point guard for the NBA. Schroder’s 19.4 ppg and 6.2 APG as a full-time starter opened up a lot of opportunities for him.

He started out on the Thunder but was later traded to the Lakers. The Lakers offered Schroder an $84 million extension, but he rejected it in favor of a bigger deal in free agency. He ultimately settled for a one-year, $5.9 million agreement. Despite being traded to the Rockets, Schroder was declared out for the season with a shoulder ailment. He’s about to enter the prime of his career, so we’ll see if he can redeem himself.

Career

L.A. Lakers acquired Schröder from Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Danny Green and the first-round draft pick Jaden McDaniels. On December 22, 2020, Schröder made his Lakers debut in a 116-109 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. He scored 14 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished out 8 assists.  He turned down a four-year, $84 million extension offer from the Lakers at the end of March 2021 in favor of exploring his options as a free agent.

He missed time twice this season because of the league’s COVID-19 health protocols, the second time being seven games at the tail end of the year. Schröder played in all 61 regular season games as a starter, averaging 15.4 points and 5.8 assists while shooting 43.7% from the field and 33.5% from deep.

He shot 40.3% from the field and 31.9% from deep as the Lakers were swept in six games by the Phoenix Suns. In those contests, he averaged 14.3 points and 2.8 assists. The Lakers’ offseason acquisition of point guard Russell Westbrook was a clear indication that they planned to move on from Schröder.

who they were able to acquire for a fraction of what the Lakers were offering during his extension talks prior to the 2020-21 season. Since the Celtics had already retired Schröder’s previous number 17 in honor of John Havlicek, he opted to play under the newer number 71 instead.
