David Blough

American football quarterback David Marshall Blough was born on July 31, 1995, and he is now a free agent. In 2015, he was Purdue’s backup quarterback and guided the team to victory over Nebraska.

His 2016 season as a redshirt sophomore saw him start 12 games and be named Academic All-Big Ten, Blough is the 35th best quarterback currently playing at the high school level. At the end of the 2019 NFL Draft, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns.

After releasing Tim Boyle and David Blough, the Lions are now looking for a backup quarterback on the waiver wire.

On Wednesday, the Lions announced that they had released Blough and signed Nate Sudfeld to be Jared Goff’s backup. Boyle was released by the Lions on Tuesday.

The Lions are considering re-signing Blough to their practice squad, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

From 2017 to 2020, the 28-year-old Sudfeld made four appearances for the Philadelphia Eagles, during which time he threw for 188 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The 49ers released him on Tuesday after he had played for them throughout the 2021 season.

In the final preseason game, Boyle and Blough both played poorly against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Coach Dan Campbell of the Lions claimed to have “clarity” afterward regarding his team’s backup quarterback options.

“I believe that’s what anybody would expect for the role, and is it somebody we know can come in and if something occurs, you know, that they can sail the ship and they can survive and win some games?” According to Campbell.

“The question you must answer is whether or not your backup can carry the team to victory if your starter is sidelined for two or three games. Now you know the dilemma we’re facing.”

Blough, 27 years old, has been with the Detroit Lions for the previous three seasons after being acquired in a deal with the Cleveland Browns in August of 2019. He started five games this year and went winless. In seven career games, he threw for 1,033 yards, four touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Blough passed for 205 yards and one touchdown against two interceptions and five sacks as the Lions lost 20-7 to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 14. Blough passed for 260 yards and two interceptions against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15, resulting in a 38-17 loss for the Lions.

The Lions lost by a score of 27-17 to the Denver Broncos in Week 16 despite Blough throwing for 117 yards and a touchdown through the air. Blough passed for 122 yards and an interception against the Green Bay Packers in Week 17, and he also scored on a 19-yard reception from wide-out Danny Amendola in a 23-20 loss. In the 2019 NFL season, Blough completed 94 passes out of 174 attempts for 984 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions.

After being waived by the Lions on September 5, 2020, Blough was added to the team’s practice squad the following day. On October 17th, he was activated and placed in the lineup. The Lions cut Blough from the 53-man roster on August 31, 2022, despite the fact that he had made the team out of training camp.
