It’s hard to say whether Devon Allen’s touchdown reception or his subsequent celebration was more stunning. On a post route, the Olympic hurdler sped past the Browns’ zone coverage and collapsed in the end zone while clutching Reid Sinnett’s pass for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Allen did an air hurdle in the end zone as a celebratory gesture. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni stated, “That was great,” according to Josh Tolentino of the Philadelphia Inquirer. What a beautiful pass from Reid, a beautiful grab and route from Devon, and what a delicious layer of protection. We did a great job with that slowly unfolding play. As we walked down the sidelines, I’m quite sure we were all high-fiving each other.

Although Allen has won three U.S. national titles in the 110-meter hurdles, he hasn’t played football since 2016. Contrarily, in 2014 while at Oregon, he caught 41 passes for 684 yards and seven touchdowns.

Allen commented, “Reid made a tremendous throw,” as reported by Edward Sutelan of the Sporting News. A 55- to 60-yard pass is about right. I’m glad I made it in the time since Reid’s arm is really powerful. Helped me out a lot. It would be easy to just catch it in the end zone and relax. Well, actually, it was pretty sweet. I appreciate the coaches letting me play in that game.

Allen saw action on offense for eight snaps and on special teams for seven, but he was not thrown to in the first preseason game. He was attacked twice on Sunday, but only once was successful. All of Allen’s in-game celebrations for touchdowns were preconceived by tight end Tyree Jackson.

That was hilarious, because all I could think was, “Man, I don’t know. If I get it, what do I do?'” Allen related. Then he said, ‘You should do a hurdle,’ and I was like, ‘What?’ I was all “Got you.”

Allen was a three-year starter at wide receiver for the University of Oregon football team after being a four-star recruit out of high school. His first year was his most successful. Although he excelled at football in college, after graduation he decided to shift his athletic concentration to hurdling and track and field.

Devon Allen

Allen, after competing for many years at the US Nationals and Olympics, decided to take part in the 2022 preseason football pro day at the University of Oregon. The 4.35-second unofficial 40-yard dash time Allen posted attracted the attention of NFL scouts. The Eagles were so impressed with him that they invited him to their training facility, the NovaCare Complex, on April 7.
