After a disappointing defeat and an exciting victory, the Yankees and Rays meet again today to settle this pivotal series. The Rays are still 4.5 games behind the Yankees heading into this three-game set, and the results of these games will determine whether or not the Rays make up ground on the Yankees in the division standings. Unless the postseason changes anything, this will be the only time these teams meet in 2022.

The Yankees’ regular rotation was disrupted by the rainout on Tuesday, so they are starting Domingo Germán on short rest. According to Lindsey Adler of The Athletic, Boone advised Germán to take another turn today because he has three days off coming up in the next week.

In the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, Germán pitched well against the Twins. There was a 12-inning game and he allowed three earned runs over six innings while striking out six, but you could be forgiven for forgetting that.

Luis Patio is the response for the Rays. The Rays’ 22-year-old has struggled with oblique and blister injuries and has spent some time in the minors, so he hasn’t gotten many starts this season. But once Shane McClanahan got hurt, he was thrust into the rotation, and his final start against the Red Sox was respectable (3 ER in 5.2 IP). He’s only pitched 18.2 MLB innings so far this year, but he’s already exhibited a serious problem with walks by issuing nine.

The Yankees continue to use lineups quite similar to the ones they’ve been forced to use recently. Oswaldo Cabrera remains in the right field, and Aaron Judge continues to bat leadoff and play center field. Because of Friday’s debacle, Miguel Andujar will start at left field in his place.

Today, Christian Bethancourt will start at catcher for the Rays, while Jonathan Aranda will take over at the first base. After serving as the DH yesterday, Randy Arozarena will shift to the right side of the infield, while Yandy Dáz will man the plate. Replacement third baseman Taylor Walls will be Taylor Walls.

Please take into account that it is currently raining in New York and that the Yankees have announced a delay.

On Sunday against the Rays, German allowed one walk and struck out one batter in an inning in which his team did not score.

Though he got the start on short rest, German only threw 14 pitches while the Yankees went through eight pitchers in their lopsided victory. His season ERA is now 3.21, and he has struck out 39 and walked 13 in 56 innings of work. The next time you see German, it will be in Milwaukee.

MLB has placed Germán on administrative leave as they investigate reports of domestic violence against him. It was officially announced on September 25 that he would be ineligible to play in any baseball games for the rest of the 2019 season. In 2019, he led all Major League Baseball pitchers with a.818 victory percentage.

By the time he had served his 81-game ban for breaking the league’s personal conduct rules in 2019, which began on January 2, 2020, Germán had been accused of domestic violence but never legally charged. Most of his ban was completed during the 2019 postseason, making him immediately eligible to play in the 2020 postseason.

The Yankees sent Germán to the minor league affiliate on April 10, 2021, after a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays. Germán pitched seven scoreless innings against the Red Sox on July 25, 2021, but a leadoff double by Alex Verdugo ruined his bid for a no-hitter. The Yankees’ bullpen let them down in a 5-4 loss, and Germán would end up with a 4-5 record and a 4.58 ERA for the 2021 season.

Right shoulder impingement syndrome landed Germán on the 60-day injured list to start the 2022 season. On July 21, 2022, he was back in the lineup to face the Houston Astros. Germán surrendered five runs in three innings during his comeback.
