According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea and RB Salzburg’s sporting director Christoph Freund are close to agreeing on a transfer that would put Freund in a similar job at Stamford Bridge.
When Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech resigned from their roles as director and technical and performance advisor, respectively, Blues co-owner and chairman Todd Boehly reportedly filled in as the club’s interim sports director during the summer transfer window.
While the club’s new owners are expected to continue spending lavishly on players in the upcoming January transfer window, reports indicate that Chelsea is planning to hire an experienced manager in the meantime.
The position of Chelsea’s sporting director has been linked to a number of high-profile transfer experts, including Luis Campos, the advisor for football at Paris Saint-Germain. If Romano is to be believed, though, Boehly has already made up his mind.
Fabrizio Romano reports that an agreement has been reached between Chelsea and RB Salzburg’s sporting director Christoph Freund, who will take on a similar role at Stamford Bridge.
During the summer transfer window, Blues co-owner and chairman Todd Boehly reportedly served as the club’s sporting director in the absence of Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech, who had previously served as director and technical and performance advisor, respectively.
Although the new ownership group is expected to continue investing heavily in players during the upcoming January transfer window, Chelsea is rumored to be planning to hire an experienced manager in the near future.
Chelsea has been linked to a number of high-profile candidates for the position of sporting director, including Luis Campos, the football advisor for Paris Saint-Germain. Romano asserts, though, that Boehly has already decided.
As he put it, “Chelsea are working on it.” “[Freund] is the one they’re after. Negotiations to finalize the personal specifics of their agreement will continue over the next few days.
He wants to go to Chelsea and try something different, and RB Salzburg knows this. Boehly has expressed interest in collaborating with both Boehly and Graham Potter. A transfer expert, Kyle Macaulay, who previously worked with Potter at Brighton, is now a recruitment analyst for Chelsea. Romano also praised Freund for his contributions to Salzburg’s recruitment of stars like Erling Haaland and Benjamin Sesko (who is being courted by Chelsea).
