Florida Sports Betting

Currently, sports betting is illegal in the state of Florida. The new compact between the Seminole Tribe and the state was challenged at the Federal level on December 21, halting sports betting activity until a judgment can be made in the case.

Residents of the Sunshine State can use FanDuel and DraftKings, two of the most popular daily fantasy sports (DFS) applications in the United States, even as lawmakers in Tallahassee continue to debate the future of legal sports betting in the state.

Sports Betting in Florida: Where Things Currently Stand

As it has elsewhere in the United States, the question of whether or not sports betting should be legalized is a heated topic in the Sunshine State. “It’s complicated” is my current relationship status on Facebook.

Legalized internet and mobile sports betting may still be some time off, as the Seminole Tribe fights the legal case to ratify their 2021 state compact at the federal level.

In spite of the fact that the Seminole offers gaming at their Hard Rock Casino locations, there are presently no brick-and-mortar sportsbooks in those locations while legal battles continue to rage on in the courts.

With the help of Draftkings and FanDuel, an initiative to put the question of legalizing sports betting in the state on the ballot in November of 2022 was successful. If this bill had been approved, the sports betting industry titans in Florida hoped it would go live in 2023.

Early in 2022, however, it appeared as though they had conceded defeat in their combined effort.

Online Sports Betting in the Neighboring States

The future of sports betting in Florida is uncertain, but it has already spread to neighboring states.

Since the 2018 PASPA verdict cleared the path for regulation, both Arkansas and Mississippi have opened their borders to legal sports betting to varying degrees.

Despite a deal being ratified between the state and the Seminole Tribe in 2021, permitting the deployment of sports betting, it is technically illegal in Florida at this time.

This 30-year compact was signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and tribal officials, but the federal government has challenged the deal, leaving the future of sports betting uncertain.

Will Florida Allow Sports Betting?

Given that Miami is home to five professional sports teams, and that Orlando, Tampa Bay, and Jacksonville each contribute two, three, and one, respectively, it’s hard to imagine that sports betting won’t be legalized in the near future.

Federal courts are currently debating the primary sticking point, which involves jurisdiction and revenue sharing through taxation. In accordance with a deal with the Florida legislature, the Seminole Indians have traditionally regulated the legal casino gambling industry in the state.

In 2021, a new compact was signed to incorporate sports betting, and the Seminole-owned Hard Rock company briefly created a mobile betting app; however, the app’s legality was questioned at the federal level, and it was subsequently pulled.

Only at casinos owned by the Seminole tribe are bets allowed to be placed in Florida. However, betting on sporting events is forbidden.

Can you sports bet online in Florida?

At the present time, internet sports betting is not available in the Sunshine State. However, the situation is fluid and there is a compelling argument for legalizing online and mobile betting in the near future.

Can I Use Draftkings in Florida?

Florida Sports Betting

DraftKings is officially against the law in this state. Legal issues rarely arise while using the DraftKings app for daily fantasy sports (DFS), which might involve real-money gaming.

It’s advised to avoid using DraftKings in Florida for the time being, although in principle, the prosecution might be made against people.

Most Likely Florida Sports Betting Sites

While it has only been available for a short period of time, the Hard Rock app is still Florida’s top choice.

The next most likely sites to establish themselves in Florida are FanDuel and DraftKings if they receive the necessary legal approvals. The “big two” are relentless in their efforts to get the sports betting subject onto the state’s November ballot.

Despite recent setbacks, the two massively popular betting companies are guaranteed to make a significant impact in Florida.

In addition, BetMGM’s high-quality product and extensive market reach have been rumored to lead to a launch in Florida.

Latest Florida Sports Betting News

The state of Florida’s sports betting arrangement with the Seminole Tribe was nullified after a federal judge ruled that the Florida gaming compact was in violation of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

As a result, Florida has banned all forms of sports betting, both online and in-person, and mobile betting is expected to be discontinued until at least 2023. The Seminole Tribe is still challenging the decision in court as of March 2022.

There’s a growing consensus that Floridians would benefit from legalized sports betting, but that won’t happen until at least 2023.

Since the DC Circuit dismissed one of the appeals in the Florida sports betting compact case, the legal status of sports betting in Florida has been in doubt for quite some time.
