He is the son of former Tennessee State wide receiver Golden Tate Jr., who was selected 120th overall in the fifth round of the 1984 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. Vanderbilt University running back Wesley Tate was his younger brother. He has two younger sisters who are sprinters at the University of Mississippi: Breanna and Deanna. Through his sister Breanna and NFL cornerback Jalen Ramsey he has two nieces.

It was a mid-season deal for a third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft that sent Tate to the Philadelphia Eagles from the Detroit Lions. He hauled in 74 passes for a total of 795 yards and four scores. On January 6, 2019, against the Chicago Bears in the Playoff Wild Card Round, he caught the game-winning touchdown pass from quarterback Nick Foles on fourth down to secure a victory. Eagles move to Divisional Round, where Tate made two catches for 18 yards in a 20-14 loss to the New Orleans Saints thanks to the catch.
