Pitcher Carlos Rodón of the San Francisco Giants and third baseman Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals will not be participating in Tuesday’s All-Star Game.
This is the first time that Altuve, an eight-time All-Star who was voted as a starter by fans, has been injured. He was omitted from the starting lineup on Friday.
This will be Andrés Giménez’s first time playing for the Cleveland Indians, and he will take his place in the starting lineup. Altuve will be replaced on the American League roster by Santiago Espinal of Toronto.
According to a press statement from the Los Angeles Dodgers, pitcher Tyler Anderson, who is 10-1 in 17 appearances and has an ERA of 2.96, will replace Rodón on their National League roster.
Since he was originally assigned to the All-Star roster on July 12, it’s not obvious why Rodón isn’t participating in this year’s game.
Atlanta’s Austin Riley, who has 100 hits and a.913 on-base percentage this season, will take Arenado’s place on the National League squad.
It’s been three to four weeks since Arenado revealed he’s been bothered by lower back soreness, but MRIs found nothing. He plans to rest up during the All-Star break.
“Recently, it’s becoming a problem.” Because I live less than an hour from Los Angeles, it didn’t make sense for me to go and do that,” Arenado added. Going home and relaxing and just chilling was probably the better course of action for me. Go back to your own abode. Make an appointment to see a doctor. Get to work, people. The trainers I’m wearing are mine. Physical therapists are available back home. ”
Saturday, Altuve stated he was “waiting to see how responded today, and I think [we] all agree that we’re making the best option.” He also replied, “I don’t think we’re going,” when asked whether he was heading to LA, adding, “We’re going to do some therapy and get ready for the second half.”
Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor was traded to the New York Mets in exchange for Giménez last year, and the 23-year-old is having a stellar year. With 10 home runs and 43 RBIs in just 78 games, he is batting.299 with a great defensive performance. With runners in scoring position, he has a.384 hitting average.
In Houston, Kristie Rieken and Tom Withers of the Associated Press provided reporting. This story was also written by Warren Mayes, who is based in St. Louis.
