Ivan Toney, a striker for Brentford, is reportedly on Chelsea’s radar as the summer transfer season winds down. The Mirror reports that Chelsea is one of the clubs interested in signing the hotshot Premier League player.
The Blues, along with Everton and Manchester United, are reportedly interested in signing Brentford’s 26-year-old forward. The Bees, the source says, are getting ready for any offers in the last weeks of the transfer market.
The Brentford center-forward is being considered by Chelsea as a possible replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Barcelona. The transfer to Chelsea could see Aubameyang’s 33-year-old salary double.
Ivan Toney is on Chelsea’s radar. According to reports, Toney may command a fee of up to £50 million if signed. He has had a stellar start to the new season. Last month, writer Dean Jones said on The Football Terrace, “I was told if Brentford is going to sell Ivan Toney, he’s going to be £50million.”
Toney has scored twice and assisted twice in the first three games of the Premier League season. The English striker is outstanding in a variety of ways, including his ability to win headers and his expertise from the penalty spot. He’s also shown himself to be a reliable performer at the highest level, boasting a high work rate and respectable speed.
Even his teammate at Brentford, Christian Norgaard, compared him to Blues legend Didier Drogba last year, which Chelsea supporters would love to hear. Someone in the locker room made a comparison between Ivan and Didier Drogba. The way he handled the ball, his first touch, and his passes reminded me a lot of him. He’s a right player and he won every header,” Norgaard added.
The fact that Toney has never played for a major club should immediately raise warning flags for Chelsea, but the Blues will need to go out at some time if they want to identify their next great striker.
The Brentford star is proving to be a nuisance for Premier League defenders with his new club. It’s a huge risk for £50 million. Follow The Chelsea Chronicle on Facebook and Twitter for up-to-the-minute Chelsea news and commentary.
Toney provided an assist in a 1-0 home victory over Luton Town, but he was sent off in overtime for a fight with Tom Lockyer.
A week and a half later, on October 21st, at the Brentford Community Stadium, he scored a hat trick in a 7-2 victory over Wycombe Wanderers. A nomination for EFL Championship Player of the Season was announced for him in April.
Toney broke the Championship record for most goals scored in a season on 8 May 2021 when he netted his 31st league goal of the season in a game against Bristol City. Three weeks later, in the 2021 EFL Championship play-off Final against Swansea City, he scored both goals in a 2-0 victory.
Toney’s claim that players were being “used as puppets” to perform the gesture while society did not change led Brentford to discontinue kneeling in protest of racism during his time with the club.
Over the course of the season, he also received racial attacks on social media. Toney has stated that he will not kneel with his teammates for the upcoming 2020-21 Premier League season, despite Brentford’s intention to do so along with the other 19 clubs.
Toney started and played the entire game in Brentford’s 2-0 victory over Arsenal in their Premier League opener on 13 August 2021. Toney netted Brentford’s first hat trick in the Premier League in a 3-1 road win over Norwich City on March 5, 2022.
