Marcel Brands, the former Everton director of football, has once again described the hardships he faced while working at the club. Brands was at Goodison Park for a little over three years before he decided to leave the club in December. PSV Eindhoven, a Dutch football team, has since employed him.

An interview given by Brands this week reveals how difficult his time at Everton was for him. Asked if he had recruited the players on the pitch, he replied, “Is it simply those guys?” when approached by a furious fan in the Main Stand during the 4-1 Merseyside derby defeat before Christmas.

Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell eventually got his man, according to James Tarkowski, after trying to sign the Blues’ newest recruit while he was playing for his first club Oldham Athletic.

Almost a decade ago, when Tarkowski was a teenager, he first caught the eye of Thelwell when he was playing for the Latics in League One – a team that had just been relegated from the Premier League 28 years prior.

Confidence in Everton’s future is at an all-time low. It’s those Blues fans who are left in the dark about what’s going on at the club they love, while the camps representing the super-rich money men involved come out with opposing assertions.

In recent months, Evertonians have been on a rollercoaster of emotions, but just when they thought they had gotten off their white-knuckle ride, somewhat dazed but able to finally crack a smile at the scary situation they had seemingly come through but survived, they’re told to strap themselves in again for another perilous journey into the unknown.

defender Matthew Mallon has earned his first professional contract with Everton after impressing in pre-season trials.

Till June 2024, Mallon has signed a two-year contract extension. As a youngster growing up in West Derby, he joined the Blues’ academy at the age of four and is now looking forward to playing first-team football for his boyhood club, having captained the under-18s and appeared in a number of games for the under-21s before.
