Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder finalized a deal involving veteran forward JaMychal Green and the Thunder’s No. 30 choice in the 2022 NBA Draft on Monday, the first of numerous transactions likely to take place throughout the summer.

For the 30th overall pick in this year’s draught and two additional future second-round picks, the Nuggets have agreed to a trade with the Thunder, originally reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

On June 21, Green, 31, will turn 32, and he has one year left on his current contract at $8.2 million. Green is expected to take advantage of a player option and return for his senior year.

A large amount of salary space will make it easy for the Thunder to sign Green at the start of the season, but it is unlikely that he will remain in Oklahoma City for the whole 2022-23 season.

An experienced big man like JaMychal Green will be sought after by a number of playoff-bound NBA clubs in need of more frontcourt support.

Averaging 7.9 points and 5.7 boards throughout the course of his professional career, Green shot 36.6 percent from the 3-point range. On the surface, JaMychal Green does not appear to be an extremely high-impact player, but he’s shown the ability to defend many positions on the court at the same time.

In the offseason, a few teams have trade exceptions that meet or surpass Green’s contract value, allowing them to absorb his contract in a trade with no substantial consequences. The Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Indiana Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Clippers, and Portland Trail Blazers are just a few of the league’s best teams right now. Check them out.

JaMychal Green had previously been linked to the Celtics. Other clubs interested in the guard include the Mavericks, Jazz, Clippers, and Nets, all of whom made the playoffs this season and are looking to improve their chances of contending for a championship next year.

Denver’s decision to part ways with Green came as no surprise, given how quickly his playing time dwindled as the 2021-22 season progressed.

Late in the season and in the Nuggets’ first-round playoff series against the Golden State Warriors, Green returned to a reserve position and averaged just 13.8 minutes per game in the playoffs.

The Nuggets will search for ways to keep their young players in the starting lineup, with Jeff Green under a $4.5 million player option for the 2022-23 season and Zeke Nnaji still on a rookie contract.

Oklahoma City Thunder GM Sam Presti’s magic in the offseason continues with this transaction.

It was widely assumed that the Thunder would explore moving the 30th overall pick in this year’s draught, but by taking on unwanted contracts from across the league and turning them into future draught assets, they have positioned themselves in a position to do so for many years to come.

The Thunder already had the 2nd and 12th picks in the 2022 NBA Draft, so moving the 30th pick was a no-brainer given the quality of players expected to be available at that position.

Not only that, but they save money in the long run because all first-round picks have guaranteed contracts.

The Thunder will be able to add two high-potential lottery picks in the draught this year, as well as continue to prepare for the future is yet another possible deal involving JaMychal Green. The first trade of the NBA offseason appears to have set the tone for a highly anticipated NBA Draft and offseason in general.
